Moroccan Discovery: From the Imperial Cities to the Sahara
We invite you to encounter Morocco's ancient ruins and sacred mosques, endless desert and storied mountains, imposing kasbahs and spirited souks. Our tour features outstanding accommodations and visits to five UNESCO World Heritage sites including three cities: Meknes, Morocco's youngest imperial city; Volubulis, with its ancient Roman ruins; and Fez, Morocco's oldest imperial city which is prized for its cultural, religious, and educational institutions. A tour highlight is a sunrise excursion by four-wheel drive vehicles to towering sand dunes at the edge of the Sahara, capped off by a camel ride along the dunes. We'll follow an ancient Berber route into the snow-topped High Atlas Mountains, see spectacular 984-foot Todra Gorge, home to a variety of rare bird and plant species, and journey along the fabled "Route of a thousand Kasbahs" to the crossroads town of Ouarzazate. A full day excursion takes us through the gorgeous palm-filled Draa Valley to 13th-century Zagora, the "Gate of the Desert." In route to Marrakesh, visit the scenic village of Ait ben-Haddou, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. We'll spend three nights in alluring Marrakech, taking time to enjoy mint tea in the home of a local Berber family, and visiting the city's famed medina (also a UNESCO site). The tour concludes in storied Casablanca.
