
Dr. James Sweeney '67, '71
Associate Dean Warnell School of Forest Resources
As Associate Dean, Dr. Sweeney is responsible for the leadership, development, and support (internal and external) of the School of Forest Resources research and public service programs. Previously as Director of Wildlife, he was responsible for fisheries and wildlife program direction on 5.5 million acres of commercial forest land for Champion. At AF&PA he was responsible for interpretation of public policy related to fish & wildlife resources, and industrial programs to facilitate response and compliance. He was coordinator of international scientific exchanges, national program coordinator of wildlife and fisheries research, and principal scientist of two research work units for the USDA Forest Service. He was assistant then associate professor with tenure, at the University of Arkansas at Monticello. He has served on national committees on biodiversity, ecosystem management, incentives for private landowners, and science in the Endangered Species Act. He has completed research on forest management and wildlife habitat relationships, published over 75 articles, and given numerous presentations to scientific meetings, workshops, and training sessions. He has served as editor of two professional journals and two symposia.
Dr. Sweeney is a Certified Wildlife Biologist. He has received 10 awards for scholastics, 3 for outstanding research publications, 3 Certificates of Merit for superior performance and research administration, and 1 award for individual achievement in industrial wildlife stewardship.
