
Claude McBride '55
Claude McBride '55 is a consultant for the UGA Alumni Association. He served as Chaplain for the Georgia Bulldogs for 32 years and is presently Chaplian Emeritus.
He has been active in denominational and community affairs wherever he has served. He presently serves on the Baptist Heritage Council. He is a past president of the Athens Ministerial Association, past moderator of the Sarepta Baptist Association and served on the executive committee of the Georgia Baptist Association and the Board of the Christian Index.
Active in Athens civic affairs, he is past president of the Athens Kiwanis Club, member of the boards of the American Red Cross, Georgia Heart Association, YWCO and the Advisory Board for Lanier Gardens. He was a founding member of the Athens Crime Prevention Committee and the Athens Youth Athletic League.
He has served churches in Henderson, Ky., Jacksonville, Fla. And Calhoun, Ga. Before coming to Athens in 1964. Here served as pastor of the Milledge Avenue Baptist Church. Recently, he was named Pastor Emeritus. McBride also graduated from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
A native of Columbus, Ga., he served on the staff of the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer that received the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for coverage of anti-crime efforts in Phenix City, Ala.
While a student, he was active in numerous campus organizations and is a member of the Gridiron and Sphinx Honor societies. He was a UGA cheerleader for three years. He is married to the former Gayle Gordy of Louvale, Ga. They have a son and a daughter and five grandchildren.
