UGA Heritage:

The Bowen Family Legacy

Barbara Bowen Wyle (BSED ’72, MED ’75) is a former Bulldog cheerleader with strong family ties to the University of Georgia.

According to Barbara, her father, Robert “Bob” Bowen, Jr., brought his family to Athens in 1952. His wife, Jane Hutto Bowen (BSED ’57) graduated from UGA five years later. Although Bob did not earn his degrees from UGA, he supported the University as a physical education teacher, assistant golf coach, intramural program director, referee, and Sanford Stadium scoreboard operator.

Barbara and her four siblings recall growing up swimming and diving in Stegeman pool, running around the cinder track, and playing hide-and-seek on the fifth floor of Memorial Hall in the athletic offices before Stegeman Coliseum was built. Eventually, all four siblings graduated from UGA:

--Robert T. Bowen, III (BSED ’73), who played basketball his freshman year

--Elizabeth O. Bowen Shaw (BMUS ’79), a member of the Redcoat Marching Band

--Bonnie Bowen Turner (BSED ’81), a member of the gymnastics team

--Bruce H. Bowen (BS ’85)

Barbara’s grandson, B. Scott Hudgins (BBA ’94) is also a UGA graduate. This is a fine example of a University of Georgia legacy. More impressive may be the fact that the entire family still lives within 70 miles of campus. According to Barbara, “It’s a great city with a great university.” We couldn’t agree more, Barbara.
