Join the NYC Chapter of the UGA Alumni Association for an afternoon of Southern hospitality in Central Park.

On Saturday, June 8, UGA alumni and friends will gather together to enjoy the 34th annual Mississippi Picnic. The Mississippi Picnic brings together some of the best of what Mississippi has to offer, including outstanding music, art, food and, of course, a healthy dose of southern hospitality!

Bring your friends, family members and pets, and join other Dawgs for this special celebration of the South. Bring a blanket or chair, and any picnic items and outdoor games you enjoy.

The Mississippi Catfish Cooking Team will serve farm-raised fried catfish with McAlister's Deli sweet tea. The Mississippi Seafood Marketing Program and Sugaree's Bakery will provide even more delicious treats from Mississippi. The price for a catfish plate is $14 per person, but feel free to simply join the group and hang out!

While the picnic will take place between noon and six, our chapter will primarily be there between noon and 2:00 p.m. Look for the red and black.

The 71st Annual Peabody Awards are finally upon us. The UGA Alumni Association's Executive Director Deborah Dietzler and Assistant Director of Regional Programs Danielle Alexander ’11 will be traveling from Athens, Georgia to host events throughout the week in New York City. There are several events surrounding the Winner's Luncheon that we hope you will consider attending.

On Thursday, May 17 at 11:00 a.m., there will be a Women of UGA Luncheon at Harbor Lights restaurant. Julie Winskie ’84 will be hosting, so join us for this three-course meal and a beautiful view of the city!
 
Friday night’s Georgia in an Empire State of Mind Alumni Mixer, co-hosted with Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, will be located at the Empire Hotel Rooftop Bar and Lounge; enjoy a great view and the company of other alumni. Boasting a perfect blend of history and bright lights, New York City is truly a breathtaking place. On Saturday, May 19 from 3:30 p.m. – 4:45 p.m., you can witness some of New York’s grandeur as we take a Tour of Grand Central Terminal. Join us for a glimpse of the inner workings of one of the most famous train stations in the United States.
 
Of course, no trip to New York City is complete without a stroll through Central Park. This is exactly what we will be doing as we Tour Central Park on Sunday, May 20 at 1:30 p.m. This event is co-hosted with the College of Environment and Design. Take a walk past Strawberry Fields (co-designed by Yoko Ono and Landscape Architect Bruce Kelly ’71) as you learn how Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux designed one of the world’s most famous parks.
 
Finally, on Tuesday, May 22, the UGA Alumni Association is hosting a Bulldog Breakfast Club at the Harvard Club of New York City with special guest host Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Jere Morehead. Breakfast will begin at 8:00 a.m. This will be a great opportunity to discuss the Peabody Awards and the events developing within your chapter.

Whether you are a resident New Yorker or will be traveling to attend the Peabody Awards, we invite you to experience the best of  New York City. We hope to see you at one or more of these upcoming events!

Welcome to the newsletter brought to you by the Alumni Association. Ain't it fancy? So, by the look of it you can see that we have changed things up a bit. Our newsletter will look like this and be done through the Alumni Association. They will be setting up webpages for all of our events and through the newsletter you will be able to click on links that will direct you to information regarding the events. One could say we are growing up (finally) and putting a much more organized effort toward staying connected with you and the University. You will also find a link to our HOMEPAGE. Here you will be able to see our event schedule, pictures, give us feedback and get connected with us via Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. The site is slick and I am really excited that we are doing this!

We are currently in the works of putting together some great events coming up for the spring. Right now, at the top of our list is NY CARES. This is starting to become an annual thing for us and we keep having fun partaking in the event. So why stop? Congratulations to Jennifer Sloan ’86 who won a Distinguished Alumni Award from the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. Sloan is the recipient of the 2007 Henry W. Grady Mid-Career Award for outstanding success in her career and for her dedication to UGA and the Grady College. This is a very prestigious award and the Association and New York Chapter are extremely proud of Jennifer and lucky to have her in New York.

NY Chapter volunteers, Bryan Tackett ’02 and Kerri Waggoner ’01, met Herschel Walker while he was taking part in a challenge from the TV show Celebrity Apprentice.

Join the UGA Alumni Association for a tour of the 9/11 Memorial on Saturday, May 18, a private tour of the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Saturday, May 18, and a Bulldog Breakfast Club at Studio Laura Loving on Tuesday, May 21. These special events taking place in NYC will be a great opportunity to connect with other UGA alumni and friends in town for the Peabody Awards.

The NYC Chapter of the UGA Alumni Association would like to invite you to a Dinner with a Dozen Dawgs. We have moved the location of the dinner to Reif's Tavern to accommodate more alumni.

If you can't get home for Mother's Day and want to spend time with your New York/Georgia family, please join us for a casual cookout with other NYC Dawgs hosted by Barbara Woods (BFA '81) and Brian Reddy (MFA '77). There will be hamburgers, hot dogs and vegetarian options. Please indicate any special dietary needs when registering.
