Interview with 40 Under 40 Honoree Mark Butler (BBA ‘02)
We take a moment to focus on the career and achievements of Mark Butler (BBA ’02), President and Founder of CXO Staffing, Inc. based out of Atlanta, GA. CXO focuses on staffing solutions ranging from direct hire placements to temporary staffing.
What do you feel like has been your biggest success in the last year?
I’m extremely proud of the non-measurable priorities I’ve defined in my life. It’s very tempting to spend the majority of my time chasing new clients, deals, and quotas, but the most important things in life are rarely measurable. When I look back on my life, I want to see an intense focus on unmeasurable things that really matter, like how well I love my wife and how much time I spend with my boys.
How did your time at UGA help you prepare for the career that you have now?
My time at UGA taught me to be bold in developing relationships and connecting with people. I came from a small town where everyone knew everyone else. It forced me to step out of my comfort zone to meet new people and experience more of what life has to offer, which has been extremely valuable in starting and running my own company.
Where do you think you will be in 5 years?
I’ve always lived in the mindset of “choose your life, backfill your career.” That being said, my goal is to continue to focus on the priorities of faith, family, service, and gratitude. As for specifics, I hope to work less, pray more, spend more time with my family, give more, serve more, and be very appreciative at all times.
What organizations outside of work are you involved with?
Pay It Forward Atlanta (Founder), Atlanta Decision Makers (Founders Circle), Radical Mentoring (Board of Directors, Alumni), Giving101 (Board of Directors), Buckhead Church (re:new mentor), and Souly Business (Alumni)
What is your favorite business book? What did you change in your life or business after reading this book?
My favorite business book is Ordering Your Private World by Gordon MacDonald. The book helped me to understand that time is a gift from God that should be used wisely and that I must live life from the inside out, cultivating my inner world so I can be more effective in my outer world. The content is deep, reflective, serious, and honest.
What would you do if you won the lottery?
I would take a ridiculous vacation with my family, then go back to doing most of the things I’m currently doing. I love my life.

UGA vs. Clemson Preview
By: Geoffrey Bell (BSFCS '07)
The time has come. The start of our 2014 - 2015 football season is merely days away now and the Dawg faithful have been licking their chops for redemption from their season-opening loss to Clemson a year ago. If you’re not excited by now, check your pulse and make sure you’re feeling well because the anticipation is at an all-time high! Here are some interesting facts about UGA football in season openers, as well as our history against Clemson:
We’re entering the 121st season of Georgia Football.
UGA is 90-27-3 in season opening games.
Mark Richt is 10-3 in season openers as head coach.
We’re 41-18-4 vs. Clemson all time.
Mark Richt is 2-1 against Clemson.
UGA has won 5 out of the last 6 matchups against Clemson.
This year, they’re playing between the hedges and will rely heavily on their Heisman-potential RB, Todd Gurley. Both coaches, Mark Richt and Dabo Swinney, are in great position to make a move in their respective conferences. Both teams have replaced their record-setting quarterbacks and have had some off-season issues with player personnel. This game is going to be a high-scoring and hard-hitting contest that’s sure to heal all your football related ailments. Both defenses have some kinks to work out early in the season, but I like Georgia to win at home. I do think Clemson is capable of an early upset of Georgia, but Mark Richt and the Bulldogs can’t afford a mistake that early in a season where so much is on the line. Be sure to spread the red and, as always, Go Dawgs!

Atlanta Film Festival
From Friday, March 28 to Sunday, April 6, the 38th Annual Atlanta Film Festival will take place. Over 25,000 film lovers will gather in Atlanta for one of the largest and longest-running film festivals in the country.
It’s an exciting time for festival staff, including UGA alumna Ali Coad (BA '11), the Special Project Coordinator for the Festival. “We’re really excited about the quality of films this year, and propelling film making and the arts in our local community,” Coad said.
However, this Festival is not just for film makers. Throughout the Festival, there will be a wide range of films geared toward a variety of audiences.
Coad’s involvement with the Festival began last spring as a volunteer intern. Shortly after the Festival wrapped, she left her position at Crawford Media Services and moved to Austin, Texas for a position with the Austin Film Festival. She stayed in touch with staff from the Atlanta Film Festival and was notified when a staff position opened this January. As the Special Project Coordinator, Ali works closely with the Festival’s Executive Director, Chris Escobar, on fostering relations with sponsors and partners of the Festival.
Coad has always had a passion for writing, storytelling and films. Coad loves the collaborative nature of film making and the ability to use visuals to tell a story. She also enjoys working with the Festival because she gets to promote filmmaking while meeting people who share her love for the arts. “I love working in an environment where people are equally invested and passionate about what they’re doing,” she said.
After Coad’s work on the Festival wraps in April, she’ll begin working on another project that is close to her heart. She will begin training for a cross country cycling trip with Bike and Build this summer. Bike and Build is a non-profit organization that organizes cross-country cycling trips to raise money and bring awareness for affordable housing. From May to July, Coad will be riding with 32 other cyclist from Nags Head, North Carolina to San Diego, California.
