Billy Payne (AB '69, JD '73) named Georgia Trustee by Georgia Historical Society

This past February, Billy Payne (AB '69, JD '73) was named a 2014 Georgia Trustee by the Georgia Historical Society. As CEO of the Atlanta Committee for the 1996 Olympic Games, he played a major role in bringing the games to Georgia. Payne is also chairman of the Augusta National Golf Club, home of the world renowned Master’s Tournament.

The Trustee tradition goes back to the founding of Georgia in 1732. The group of social reformers focused on improving prison conditions and helping prisoners find jobs upon their release. They also developed cities, laying out towns and regions, and organized a militia.

Trustees of the new millennium play more of a metaphoric role, highlighting members of the community who have dedicated themselves to the betterment of Georgia. Prior to 2009, the last Trustee was appointed in 1752. In 2009, the tradition was reinstated. Annually, the Georgia Historical Society, in conjunction with the Governor’s Office, admits two new members.

This year, Payne joins the ranks of many great Georgia Trustees, including Vince Dooley, Hank Aaron and Ted Turner. Congratulations, Billy!

Faculty Spotlight: Dr. James Marshall Shepherd

Another star is born - and this time, it is a UGA professor stepping into the spotlight.

Dr. James Marshall Shepherd, a professor in the Department of Geography, will host a new Weather Channel show titled, “WxGeeks” (meaning Weather Geeks).

Shepherd received his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from Florida State University, and joined the UGA faculty in 2006. He teaches courses including ‘Introduction to Weather and Climate’ to ‘Applied Climatology in the Urban Environment.’

Though he may be a new celebrity to the general public, Shepherd is well-known in the climate and weather community. He is a former NASA scientist, the 2013 President of the American Meteorological Society, and heads the nationally-recognized Atmospheric Sciences Program at UGA.

During each episode, Shepherd and other special guests will share expert advice, news and weather-related conversation to educate the viewers in an entertaining format.

WxGeeks producer, Mike Chesterfield, said, “We hope the show can be as geeky and technical as an offline conversation between geeky weather people would be.”
