Investiture ceremony for UGA President Jere W. Morehead

This morning, I was proud to serve as a marshall during the investiture ceremony for UGA President Jere W. Morehead.

The ceremony, during which President Morehead was vested with the garments or insignia signifying the authority of his new position, was held in the Hugh Hodgson Concert Hall on campus at 10:00 a.m. Although President Morehead has been in office since July 1 of this year, this morning's ceremony was a nice way of "officially" presenting President Morehead as the top leader of our institution.

The ceremony was perfectly executed by the UGA Office of Special Events and I was pleased to see the faces of so many leaders, friends and supporters of President Morehead in the audience and on the stage. I trust that everyone in attendance enjoyed themselves. One of the speakers put it best when he said, "It's not often that you know you are experiencing an important moment in history while it is taking place. Today is one of those days."

Ceremony speakers included Georgia Governor Nathan Deal; Henry M. "Hank" Huckaby, chancellor of the University System of Georgia; William "Dink" NeSmith, chair of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia; and Athens Mayor Nancy B. Denson. U.S. District Court Chief Judge Julie E. Carnes presided over the ceremony, and U.S. District Court Judge Steve C. Jones welcomed the audience. Representatives for faculty, staff, students and alumni were on hand to share a few remarks and congratulate President Morehead on joining a long line of esteemed leaders. UGA Alumni Association President Tim Keadle (BBA '78) spoke on behalf of alumni, stating that President Morehead could count on the Alumni Association throughout his presidency.

I wish President Morehead all the best and look forward to another era of prosperity here at the University of Georgia.

3rd Annual TEDxUGA is Friday, March 27

UGA is hosting its 3rd Annual TEDxUGA event in Tate Grand Hall on Friday, March 27 from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. What is TEDx? TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxUGA, where x = independently organized TED event. At the TEDxUGA event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized. Several UGA alumni will present at this year's TEDxUGA event:

  • Lemuel LaRoche (BSW '02, MSW '03)
  • Michelle Blue (BBA '13)
  • Julie Rushmore (PHD '13, DVM '17)
  • Chris Dixon (ABJ '89, MMC '95)
  • Lisa Taylor (JD '01)

Won't be in Athens or missed out on tickets for the event? TEDxUGA will be livestreamed begining at 2:00 p.m. on Friday. This will be a great opportunity for alumni and friends to participate and engage from across the country. You can also interact with the event on Twitter.
