A few Alumni Association staff members, Student Alumni Council members and alumni volunteers from the Athens Chapter stopped by the UGA Student Veterans Resource Center today to deliver some sweet treats and show our appreciation for these students' commitment to our country. The students we encountered lounging in the SVRC were enjoying desserts from a number of organizations and were happy to chat with us for a few minutes. We enjoyed discussing their plans for the future and what their roles had been in the military. It was a nice gathering and I commend the university for setting up a lounge for these nontraditional students to call "home" on campus.
A couple of weeks ago, a fellow UGA employee sent me an interesting article about former Gym Dawg Lt. Commander Leah Brown (BS '98). Brown recently received the Army Bronze Star for her humanitarian efforts from October 2012 to May 2013. During that time, Brown was assigned to a hospital in Tarin Kowt Forward Operating Base, located in the southeast Uruzgan province of Afghanistan. The area lacks proper medical care for residents and suffers from poverty and warfare.
While there, Brown, an orthopedic doctor, provided patient care to the local population. She and others were invited by the local hospital to lend helping hands to suffering citizens. She conducted surgeries and provided care that other doctors in the area who unable to offer.
The all-female medical team that helped Afghan women was able to establish relationships with the female patients. “Being able to treat Afghan women was a very big deal due to their rigid beliefs rooted in old ways. It was a huge turnaround and a big accomplishment. We eventually saw women on a regular basis, but at first we never saw any. We started seeing young girls, then older women and then mid-adult age women. This symbolized that we had advanced in our relationship and were trusted,” the alumna said.
I am honored to recognize Brown’s efforts on this Veterans Day. Thank you for your service and for representing the Bulldog Nation so well!

Tomorrow is the last day to take advantage of early registration prices for the 7th annual Dawg Trot 5K Run/Walk on March 22.
Athens' largest 5K has become an annual tradition, providing an early-spring opportunity for UGA alumni and friends to gather together and enjoy UGA's beautiful campus. T-shirts will be given to participants who register by Thursday, March 13 and to walk-up registrants on a first-come, first-served basis. Refreshments will be provided after the race. An official Run & See Georgia Grand Prix race, participants can use their Dawg Trot time as a qualifier for the Peachtree Road Race and other races across the country.
Dawg Trot is an official Dawgs on the Move event. Dawgs on the move is a UGA Alumni Association initiative to encourage UGA alumni and friends to get active. Dawgs on the Move supports the UGA Obesity Initiative, which addresses Georgia's obesity problem through treatment, prevention and research.
Start warming up for Dawg Trot and register today!
Kyle Green (BS ’12) is taking the “young” in “young alumni” to heart with his new American-made clothing line, Young Hearted Apparel.
Following graduation, Green didn't quite feel like a full-fledged adult. Young Hearted Apparel is inspired by this feeling, and appeal to “fledgling adults not quite ready to settle into life in solid stripes or basic patterns.” The line features clothing emblazoned with sea life, funky patterns, and pop art representing beloved characters of '90s television.
However, style is not Green’s only goal. He places great emphasis on the quality and origin of his products, too, using only high-grade materials and American production. The alumnus further emphasizes the point, “Producing it outside of America was one thing I wouldn’t bend on. The U.S. apparel manufacturing industry has seen such a loss, and with the economy and outsourcing being a major talking point in the last election, there was no way I was going to follow in the footsteps of other fashion companies with regard to this issue.”
Green cites UGA as having helped shape his clothing line. He credits his desire to have fun with his “young hearted mindset,” and acknowledges the important guidance he received from his professors as he built his business. “[My professors] are the ones who prepared me and gave me the tools and confidence to enter the professional world.”
Congratulations, Kyle, on all your success! Sounds like we might have a future Bulldog 100 business owner in our midst!
