Congratulations UGA! We have been selected as one of the top 20 schools for “The South’s Best Tailgate” by Southern Living magazine.
In the South, tailgating is a time-honored tradition. From the food to the style and traditions, nobody does tailgating quite like Southerners. The editors at Southern Living huddled together to post a pre-season roster of the top 20 Southern schools with the greatest pregame celebrations. Readers and fans will ultimately determine the school that hosts "The South's Best Tailgate."
I encourage alumni and friends to vote daily for the Dawgs from August 15–October 1 at southernliving.com/tailgate or via smartphone by downloading the complimentary Digimarc Discover app. Simply scan the corresponding text in the September issue. One vote per day is counted toward the final tally. Votes placed on game days count twice toward the final tally.
The winner will be crowned “The South’s Best Tailgate” at a home game by November 10. The September issue featuring the schools in the running for “The South’s Best Tailgate” title is in newsstands now.
UGA falls in to the “Powerhouse” category, complements of our storied football program and general ability to have a good time. Help UGA take on Alabama, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas to claim the number one spot by encouraging fellow Dawgs to vote. At the end of the day, we all know that Athens has the greatest game day tradition, but there is nothing wrong with another title to boast about. Go Dawgs!
The UGA College of Education (COE) is now accepting applications for its 2014 Distinguished Alumni Awards.
These awards honor the achievements of COE alumni, undergraduate or graduate, who have gone above and beyond in their professional accomplishments, and service and contributions to the education community.
Nominations will be accepted through Friday, March 21. To nominate a deserving individual, please submit the completed nomination form electronically.
The UGA Alumni Association encourages you to provide input as COE seeks to recognize those individuals who bring distinction and honor to both UGA and the College of Education around the world!
If you have any questions, simply email Elizabeth Gaughf at email@example.com.
Get nominating, Bulldogs! (And don't forget about the UGA Alumni Association 40 Under 40 nominations, too!)
The UGA College of Engineering continues to flourish since it was established in 2012. Helping lead this dramatic growth is Stephan Durham, an associate professor in the college.
Professor Durham earned his bachelor’s, master's and doctoral degrees from the College of Engineering at the University of Arkansas. He first arrived at UGA in January 2012 to assist with the development of the new undergraduate degree program in civil engineering.
Durham, whose teaching and research interests center on concrete materials, structural engineering and sustainability, enjoys engaging students with “hands-on” engineering through his Civil Engineering Materials class. He describes the course as one in which students “mix and test sustainable concrete mixtures and examine the behavior of steel and wood when subjected to loads.” He also notes that he enjoys the part of the semester during which students construct concrete Frisbees for a class competition.
In addition to teaching, Durham helped build the civil engineering program from the ground up, and now serves as its program coordinator. He has helped grow the program from 63 to 108 students in just two years. During its short existence, the college has already been awarded a 2012 Outstanding University Award by the American Concrete Award Institute, and has instituted a student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
The UGA Alumni Association appreciates all that Durham has done for UGA’s engineering program!

Tomorrow is the last day to take advantage of early registration prices for the 7th annual Dawg Trot 5K Run/Walk on March 22.
Athens' largest 5K has become an annual tradition, providing an early-spring opportunity for UGA alumni and friends to gather together and enjoy UGA's beautiful campus. T-shirts will be given to participants who register by Thursday, March 13 and to walk-up registrants on a first-come, first-served basis. Refreshments will be provided after the race. An official Run & See Georgia Grand Prix race, participants can use their Dawg Trot time as a qualifier for the Peachtree Road Race and other races across the country.
Dawg Trot is an official Dawgs on the Move event. Dawgs on the move is a UGA Alumni Association initiative to encourage UGA alumni and friends to get active. Dawgs on the Move supports the UGA Obesity Initiative, which addresses Georgia's obesity problem through treatment, prevention and research.
Start warming up for Dawg Trot and register today!
