The UGA Alumni Association and the
Women of UGA invite you to a
Women of UGA Luncheon

While many women are acquainted with the latest fashion trends and designer labels, few are aware of the business of fashion and the hard work that goes into creating luxury fashion items.

Margaret Mathews (BSHE ’81, MED ’83) will host special guests Ginger Howard (BSHE ’87) and Lia Moraitakis (BSFCS ’09) for a Women of UGA Luncheon that will leave attendees with a greater understanding of the fashion industry.

Ginger Howard is a former Bulldog 100 honoree and the owner of Ginger Howard Selections in Buckhead, a boutique that offers the finest in quality, classic, and fashion-forward fabrics and styles. Howard’s love for fashion began in high school in Waycross, Ga., where she worked for a family-owned department store. While majoring in fashion merchandising at UGA, she worked in a small boutique in Athens called JJ’s, where she eventually became manager. She was later a buyer for Shaw’s, Inc., eventually venturing out on her own in 1993 with the Ginger Howard Company, a Southern buying office that represented 25 stores. In 1996, Howard moved to Atlanta and began a trunk show business that led to the opening of Ginger Howard Selections in 2001. In her free time, the alumna is heavily involved with the Republican Party, a passion that sparked during her part-time role with the Republican National Committee under former President George H. W. Bush.

Lia Moraitakis is the owner and designer of Copella Designs, a jewelry company that caters to a variety of women including 20-something trendsetters and sophisticated socialites. The word copella means ‘sophisticated, beautiful girl’ in Greek – a nod to both the designer’s Greek heritage and the way she wants her customers to feel wearing her creations. Moraitakis’s jewelry is inspired by designs from around the world, including Grecian coined costumes, vintage and estate pieces from flea markets, layered tribal necklaces, and other bright baubles. The alumna was born and raised in Atlanta. Her interest in art stems from classes she took at a young age in painting, photography, calligraphy and ceramics. After studying interior design and art history at UGA, she worked for leather company Jerry Pair Leather – a role she still fills today. Therefore, this dedicated young alumna works diligently in her free time to fulfill her Copella Designs orders, sometimes enlisting the help of family members who are proud to help support her growing business.

Hostess Margaret Mathews is a member of the UGA Alumni Association Board of Directors and founder of Mathews & Associates, a strategic fundraising and development consulting firm. Prior to founding Mathews & Associates, Mathews served as a development director, college foundation manager, county extension agent, and community relations and government affairs representative. She is a fashion-lover at heart and is looking forward to hosting Howard and Moraitakis.

The group will gather at Brio in Buckhead from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to learn from these women about what it takes to successfully start, run, and manage a business in the fashion world. Attendees will also benefit from networking with fellow alumni and friends, so don’t forget to bring your business cards!
