What is the New Media Institute?

The New Media Institute in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication is dedicated to exploring the critical, commercial, and creative dimensions of innovative digital media technology.

Currently, the NMI focuses on personal media: mobile, social, and gaming. Coming from any major, NMI students can receive a New Media Certificate attesting that they are technowledgeable – they know how to apply new media in their chosen field. Each semester, about ten teams of NMI students develop new media products, systems, and approaches for client organizations. Committed to innovative and realistic new media applications, NMI projects address real world demands in a variety of contexts.

Volunteers are needed for two Alumni Association events taking place on campus during 2013 Spring Commencement week: the inaugural Commencement Celebration on Wednesday, May 8 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and the Welcome at the Arch on Friday, May 10 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

All volunteers will receive the official UGA Alumni T-shirt. Please note that volunteers will be standing for most of these events. Volunteers must be 18+.

Commencement Celebration (May 8 - 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.) The Alumni Association is hosting a special graduation party in the Tate Student Center Plaza on campus, and needs your help handing out giveaways, providing information to graduates about alumni chapters, and assisting with graduate contact information updates.

Welcome at the Arch (May 10 - 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; 2-hour shifts) The Alumni Association will welcome graduates and their families to the Arch and other key landmarks on campus with bottled water and information about staying connected after graduation. Metro Atlanta BeltLine Clean Up

The Metro Atlanta Chapter has adopted the East Side Trail segment of the Atlanta BeltLine and needs your help to make it beautiful! This volunteer project will involve removing trash and invasive species from the site. Clean-up will end between noon and 1:00 p.m., depending on the number of volunteers participating. Water and light snacks will be provided. Please bring work gloves if you have them!

What is the Atlanta BeltLine? From the Atlanta BeltLine website:
This sustainable project is providing a network of public parks, multi-use trails and transit by reusing 22 miles of historic railroad corridors circling downtown and connecting 45 neighborhoods to each other.

Asheville Clean Streams Day

Celebrate Clean Streams Day in Asheville by joining local UGA alumni and friends for a river cleanup on Saturday, May 18.

The chapter will gather at the Swannanoa River at 9 a.m. and spend approximately four hours cleaning up the riverbanks. Afterward, the group will head to Appalachian Vintner to relax after a hard day’s work.

Join UGA College of Environment and Design Dean Daniel Nadenicek and Georgia Tech Professor Emeritus Doug Allen (BLA '71) for a group tour of the National September 11 Memorial on Saturday, May 18.

The National September 11 Memorial is a tribute to the nearly 3,000 people killed in the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, at the World Trade Center site, near Shanksville, Pa., and at the Pentagon, as well as the six people killed in the World Trade Center bombing in February 1993.

This special tour will discuss the international competition held in 2003 to select a design for the memorial. One of Allen’s former students, Michael Arad, won the design award for the memorial from more than 5,200 entries.

David Vaughan (AB '84), owner of the largest personal collection of Civil War photographs, will lead a private tour of the "Civil War and American Art" exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The exhibit explores how American artists responded to the Civil War and its aftermath, and features works by leading figure painters Winslow Homer and Eastman Johnson, landscape painters Sanford R. Gifford and Frederic E. Church, and photographers Mathew Brady and George Barnard. A portion of Vaughan's collection is included in the exhibit.

Raleigh Chapter Baseball Game

You are cordially invited to attend College Alumni Night at the Durham Bulls baseball stadium on Friday, May 31, 2013, at 7:05 p.m. The Durham Bulls will be playing the AAA Affiliate of the New York Yankees. There will be a fireworks show at the stadium after the game.

This will be a wonderful opportunity for you and your family to have some outdoor fun with other UGA alumni and friends, wearing your red and black to represent UGA during College Alumni Night. The Bulls are encouraging alumni groups to wear their school’s colors and bring small flags, signs, etc.

We have reserved 20 seats in a prime location in the upper deck (under the terrace awning) behind home plate for just $9.99 per seat. We ask that you register by Thursday, May 10 in case we need to increase the number of reserved seats.

I will be sending out more information closer to the game with seating charts, concession maps, etc.

Denver Dawgs Helping Paws

The Denver Chapter of the UGA Alumni Association will be spending time giving a little TLC to the dogs at Freedom Service Dogs (in the form of playing with them). We will meet at 9:00 a.m. on June 1.

Freedom Service Dogs, a registered 501(3)(c) nonprofit organization, enhances the lives of people with disabilities by rescuing dogs and custom training them for individual client needs. On Sunday, June 2 at BlackFinn American Grille, the St. Louis Chapter of the UGA Alumni Association will be collecting toys for the children of Moore, Okla., as that community recovers from the recent tornado. Please bring a gender-neutral, new toy for any age child. Suggestions include a book, board game, athletic gear, etc. BlackFinn will donate 10 percent of food/beverage sales to this initiative for alumni who choose to eat at the restaurant between noon and 6:00 p.m.

University of Georgia alumni and friends will enjoy Alfred Hitchcock’s 1958 classic “Vertigo” under the stars at Leu Gardens on June 7– and they want YOU to join them for this special movie night.

Beautiful Leu Gardens will open at 6:00 p.m. and the movie will begin at 8:30 p.m. Bring a blanket or chair, picnic items and beverages for a relaxing Friday evening under the stars with fellow Dawgs, family and friends. And, of course, don’t forget your red and black!

Admission is $5 plus tax for adults and $2 plus tax for children. Leu members may attend for free. Admission will be collected at the door.

New York City Mississippi Picnic

Join the NYC Chapter of the UGA Alumni Association for an afternoon of Southern hospitality in Central Park.

On Saturday, June 8, UGA alumni and friends will gather together to enjoy the 34th annual Mississippi Picnic. The Mississippi Picnic brings together some of the best of what Mississippi has to offer, including outstanding music, art, food and, of course, a healthy dose of southern hospitality!

Bring your friends, family members and pets, and join other Dawgs for this special celebration of the South. Bring a blanket or chair, and any picnic items and outdoor games you enjoy.

The Mississippi Catfish Cooking Team will serve farm-raised fried catfish with McAlister's Deli sweet tea. The Mississippi Seafood Marketing Program and Sugaree's Bakery will provide even more delicious treats from Mississippi. The price for a catfish plate is $14 per person, but feel free to simply join the group and hang out!

While the picnic will take place between noon and six, our chapter will primarily be there between noon and 2:00 p.m. Look for the red and black.

Lee Zell (AB '96) knows sports - in fact, she is a national account executive with Turner Sports in Atlanta. Christy Plott Redd (BBA '02) knows fashion - she is the creative director and vice president of sales for American Tanning and Leather Company, which is the country's leading supplier of of reptile skins to fashion houses in Paris, Milan and New York.

How did they get to where they are today? The two former UGA 40 Under 40 honorees successfully navigated industries traditionally dominated by men. On June 12, the pair will co-host a special Women of UGA Luncheon at La Taglietella in Midtown Atlanta, and will share their secrets to success.
