Armed Forces Alumni Spotlight
U.S. Air Force Major General Jack L. Rives '74, '76 and Marine Captain Brett Grayson '98, '03 were recently featured in the Phi Gamma Delta FIJI magazine. General Rives was appointed Judge Advocate General (JAG) of the Air Force in February 2006. Captain Grayson, a former student worker with the UGA Alumni Association was deployed to Iraq in January 2007 as Assistant to the Staff Judge Advocate for Second Marine Aircraft Wing (Forward).

Operation Bulldog Drop Recipient
In the November- December edition of the Association's E-Newsletter, there was a call for names and addresses of active military serving in the Middle East for Operation Bulldog Drop. Brook W. Bedell '99, a company commander of Headquarters Company, 15th Military Intelligence Battalion (AE) received one of the care packages and emailed the Association the following message:

"...The gift is awesome! The most prized possession from the package was a CD of the UGA / FLA game 2007..."

Serving in Iraq
Brian C. Fessler, 1Lt in the US Air Force is currently serving with the U.S. Army in Iraq at Forward Operating Base Delta, near the city of Kut, Iraq. He's pictured with one of his translators.

Serving in Egypt
Since graduating from UGA in 2004 Matthew L. Bottino has served in Iraq and is currently stationed in Egypt. Bottino recently visited Mt. Sinai.


The Women of UGA Program is designed to provide a forum for all women affiliated with the University of Georgia to connect with one another for personal and professional growth. Programming focuses on professional skill development, social activities, and community initiatives. All female students, faculty, staff, and alumnae are welcome to attend.

UGA Press Book of the Month
"Peachtree Creek: A Natural and Unnatural History of Atlanta's Watershed" by David R. Kaufman. Through his expeditions down Peachtree Creek David R. Kaufman takes readers through such places as Piedmont and Chastain Parks, which, aside from the polluted water, are beautiful, even bucolic.

Welcome New Dean
UGA Alumni Association Associate Executive Director Diane Johnson '82 presented a gift from the UGA Alumni Association to Dr. Mike Clutter '83, '91, new Dean of the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources.

Rhodes Scholars
The University of Georgia is the only public university in the nation to have two recipients of the Rhodes Scholarship this year. UGA senior Deep Shah of Duluth, Ga. and 2005 graduate Kate Vyborny of Washington, D.C. have been awarded 2008 Rhodes Scholarships to attend Oxford University.

*Robert Osborne Classic Film Festival Line up
The following movies were selected for the fourth annual Robert Osborne festival April 10-13: "Young Frankenstein," "Notorious," "Journey to Center of the Earth," "African Queen," "Lawrence of Arabia," "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?," "The Way We Were" and "The King and I." The UGA Alumni Association and a group of seniors have formed SoloSENIORS to foster interaction and networking among mature single professionals. The group is open to unmarried men and women at least 50 years of age who are members of the UGA Alumni Association. Alex Malcolm Dresser was born April 26, 2007 at 7:49 a.m. and weighed 9 lbs. 10 oz. Proud parents are Brian (MS Ecology '03) and Heather Dresser of Hooksett, New Hampshire. Older brother Ian, turns three in January.

UGA Alum Named Georgia's Assistant Principal of the Year
Al Darby, Assistant Principal at Winder Barrow High School in Winder, Ga., has been named 2007/2008 Georgia Association of Secondary School Principals, "Assistant Principal of the Year." Darby is being recognized for his outstanding accomplishments as a school leader.


What's Your Advice?
If you could go back and do it all over again, what would you tell yourself as a first year college student or as a new college graduate? Help out the next generation of Bulldogs by submitting advice for the UGA Alumni Association New Graduate and Freshman "If I Only Knew Then..." Advice Book series. The two books not only provide insightful wisdom and guidance from those who have been there before, but also act as a networking tool and connect recent graduates and new students with alumni. Advice is always being accepted, but to see yours printed in the 2008 books, please submit online or print off a downloadable form, fill it out and send it to the address or fax number listed by Feb. 15, 2008.

*Annual Founders' Day Lecture
The 2008 Founders' Day Lecture to celebrate the 223rd anniversary of the University of Georgia is Thursday, Jan. 24 at 3 p.m. at the University Chapel. Dorinda Dallmeyer '73, '77, '84, director of Environmental Ethics Certificate Program will present the lecture, "Turning the Tide: Saving the Seas."

Back by popular demand, the UGA Alumni Association is seeking alumni love stories. UGA Capital Campaign
The University of Georgia has surpassed the $500 million milestone in its Archway to Excellence Campaign. President Michael F. Adams praised the commitment of alumni and friends who helped the university reach its target early, but said the fundraising effort will continue according to its original time frame. Atlanta Art Exhibit: "A Room with Good Light"
UGA professor Mary Ruth Moore's art usually involves a pinhole optic in black & white photography. "My photographs are inspired in rural south Oconee County, GA, the Georgia islands, Tuscany, Renaissance paintings, and passages from the Bible," says Moore.

*Spring Ring Week
The UGA Alumni Association Spring Ring Week is Feb. 18-22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the UGA Bookstore and the Student Learning Center on the second floor across from Jittery Joe's. The Official Class Ring is available exclusively to graduates and enrolled students who have completed at least 60 credit hours and achieved junior or senior year standing.

Cox Story

Martha Holland Cox '70, of Camilla, Ga., is a third generation alumna with a legacy that includes seven UGA graduates in her immediate family.

Martha majored in elementary education, following in the footsteps of her late mother, Eva Nelson Holland '71, of Perry, Ga. Martha is married to Cader Cox III '71, who majored in Business Administration.


UGA's Greatest Generation
In an effort to recognize the "Greatest Generation" World War II veterans, the UGA Alumni Association is sponsoring a special project which will include collecting "war stories" from alumni, staff, and faculty who have personal memories from the war years. Wooten
Dr. Carl Wooten, Jr. '43, a native of Homerville Ga. recently visited the UGA Alumni Association. This was his first trip back to campus in 64 years. After graduating from UGA, Wooten served in WWII in the Burma campaign. Upon his return home, he went to UNC-Chapel Hill and received his doctorate in Chemistry.
