LOST RING
In the 1960s, Dr. Robert A. Wells '56, '73, and his family vacationed on Mt. Rainier in the Cascade Mountains near Seattle, Washington. While at an overlook viewing area near the lodge Well's class ring slipped off of his finger. Sometime later, he noticed that his UGA class ring was gone. Robert was sure that he would never see his ring again. Last month, Ralph Fidler from Oregon called the UGA Alumni Association, to see if we might be able to connect him with the owner of a UGA class ring. Though the name of the owner was engraved on the inside of the ring, Fidler was embarrassed that he had not called sooner, having had the ring for over 20 years which he found on Mt. Rainier. The ring was in great condition, and soon reclaimed by Wells who is a retired faculty member of Georgia Southern and living in Statesboro, Georgia.

If you have found a UGA class ring and would like to return it to its rightful owner, call the UGA Alumni Association at 1-800-606-8786.

Four University of Georgia coeds are happily maintaining a strong family tradition - they are fourth generation Bulldog legacies.

L-R: Sissy Martin, Elizabeth Martin, Laura Bland, Judy Bland, Beth Bland, Kim Bland
Sisters, Beth, Kim and Laura Bland and their first cousin Elizabeth Martin are following in the steps of their mothers, grandparents, and great grandfather.

All four legacies are from Tifton, Ga., and the three Bland sisters are Family and Consumer Sciences majors as were their mother, aunt and grandmother.

Their first cousin Elizabeth Martin is in Pharmacy School. Beth Bland is getting her Masters in Food Science and sister Kim is practice teaching this semester.

Elizabeth's parents Cissy and Lamar Martin both graduated from UGA in 1973. They maintain residences in Tifton and Athens, Lamar is an Assistant Dean in the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences.

The coed's Uncle, Frank Riley Jr., '71, majored in Forestry and now works and resides in Hiawassee, Ga.

The grandparents are Frank Riley, Sr., 43, and Sarah Brown Riley, '45. Frank was a Forestry major and Sarah received her degree in Home Economics. They now reside in Butler, Ga. where Frank is retired from the USDA.

Their great grandfather, Walter Brown, '17, was Director of UGA's Cooperative Extension Service for 17 1/2 years from 1937-54. His wife, Clemmie, was a graduate of the State Normal School which later became affiliated with UGA.

Walter Brown received national acclaim for his leadership in advancing Cooperative Extension work in Georgia. When the distinguished administrator graduated in 1917, he had no way of knowing that 87 years later four beautiful granddaughters would be following in his steps at UGA.

Surely, he would have been tremendously pleased with this unique legacy maintained through four generations.

Claude McBride '55, former UGA Alumni Association Tour Director is a veritable repository of campus lore and is now writes our Campus Candid as well as our Legacy stories such as the one above. If you have a Campus Candid idea or interesting legacy story please e-mail Claude at cmcbride@uga.edu.

"Thanks for your October newsletter follow-up about the Iron Horse, and for referencing the column I wrote in R&B in spring of '54. That brought back lots of memories. I was living in Milledge Annex that fall, so I remember well witnessing the reaction to the Iron Horse in front of Milledge, Milledge Annex (do I have that name right??) and Reed Hall. As you point out, Milledge housed the male athletes at that time, and Reed (almost brand new) was the principal men's freshman dorm, I think. So, as you note, there couldn't have been a worse place on campus to locate the statue.

As for Pattison and his earlier sculpture (the one apparently still standing near Fine Arts), I think I am correct that it created another controversy of sorts when the Fine Arts building had to be altered in some way -- a window or door removed, or possibly part of a wall removed -- in order to get it out of the basement where Pattison had completed it. If I'm correct, that created another reason for the student ridicule of the artist...

Your article introduced me to the e-newsletter, which I will now add to my regular reading. Even after 25 years in Tallahassee, I still love UGA and visit it fairly frequently as a member of The Red & Black board."

-Carrol Dadisman '56
Retired (since 1997) publisher of Tallahassee Democrat
