Red and Black Alliances
The UGA Alumni Association is proud to sponsor a new series to gather its graduates who work at the same place. Third Annual University of Georgia -
Georgia Tech Golf Challenge

You are invited to participate in the third annual Southern Company University of Georgia - Georgia Tech Golf Challenge Monday, Oct. 22. Proceeds from this charity event will fund scholarships to the University of Georgia and the Georgia Institute of Technology from the Southern Company UGA Club and the Southern Company Georgia Tech Club. The Women of UGA Program is designed to provide a forum for all women affiliated with the University of Georgia to connect with one another for personal and professional growth. UGA Press Book of the Month
"Creation Evolution Debate Historical Perspectives" by Edward J. Larson. Larson, who has taught at UGA for twenty years, discusses such topics as the transatlantic response to Darwinism, the American controversy over teaching evolution in public schools, and the religious views of American scientists.

UGA Vet School Horse
and Hound Tourney

The Second Annual Horse and Hound Golf Tournament, Monday, Nov. 5 will benefit the UGA College of Veternarian Medicine Teaching Hospital Building Fund. The Tourney will be held at the beautiful White Columns Country Club in Alpharetta, Ga. For more information click here.

UGA's Taste of Home meets
"Taste of the South"

The September issue of, "Taste of the South" magazine features an extensive article on the University of Georgia's annual
Taste of Home contest, in which parents submit students' all-time favorite dish to be prepared and served in the dining halls. The article includes recipes from recent winning dishes.



The UGA Alumni Association and a group of seniors have formed SoloSENIORS to foster interaction and networking among mature single professionals. The group is open to unmarried men and women at least 50 years of age who are members of the UGA Alumni Association. William Brady Beckham was born March 19, 2007 to Laurel Gulish '01 and Brad Beckham. He was born at 4:19 a.m., weighed 7 lbs., 2 oz. and was 19 3/4 inches long.

Bridge Collapse

Dale Plemmons '91, safety administrator for the Minnesota Department of Transportation, credits the UGA Environmental Health Science program with providing him the training and education needed to respond to the tragic collapse of the I-35W highway bridge in Minneapolis, Aug. 1. Plemmons and fellow rescuers were visited by First Lady Laura Bush.

Welcome New Staff
The University of Georgia Admissions Office has added a new home in Atlanta. Sr. Asst. Director Jackie Pearson and Admissions Counselor Lindsey Earnhardt can be found in the UGA Atlanta Alumni Center. Pearson and Earnhardt will be delighted to talk to Association members and their prospective students about the admissions process. Coach Richt is currently in fifth place in the running for this year's Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year title, which is awarded to the college football coach who most embodies the characteristics of responsibility and excellence on and off the field.

*UGA Educator Appreciation Program
If you are a teacher or administrator who graduated from UGA, the Alumni Association wants to recognize you. Educators in the Athens/Clarke/Oconee areas contact Wanda Darden, those in the metro Atlanta area, contact Meredith Carr '00 and the Association will organize a UGA Educator Appreciation event at your school.

UGA Capital Campaign
The University of Georgia has surpassed the $500 million milestone in its Archway to Excellence Campaign. President Michael F. Adams praised the commitment of alumni and friends who helped the university reach its target early, but said the fundraising effort will continue according to its original time frame. Dawgs Feeding Dogs
Last football season alumni and fans contributed 10,500 lbs. of pet food to local no kill animal shelters in honor of Uga's 50th anniversary. Contribute to this year's goal of 10 tons by bringing pet food to your regional Game Watching Parties or contact your local Chapter or Club president about a drop-off location for your donation to the Dawgs Feeding Dogs Campaign. Cat food is also appreciated.

No One Should Bark Alone
UGA football season has kicked off and many Bulldogs are gathering together to cheer the red and black on to victory. Join fellow UGA graduates and enthusiasts to watch the televised football games. Check your Chapter or Club website for details. If you are traveling, remember you can attend any UGA activity that is taking place. This is a great way to always "feel at home" across this great Bulldog Nation.

GAPS Founders Honored
Current Graduate and Professional Scholars (GAPS) president Siteria Gregory presented Anthony Granberry '86 and Samuel Matchett '84, with plaques for founding GAPS. The plaques were presented at the Alumni Cosmo event recently held in Atlanta. Matchett and Grandberry organized GAPS in 1984 to provide academic support for minority graduate and professional students at the University of Georgia.

*Jazz on the Lawn
The UGA Alumni Association Multicultural Programs is bringing back the renowned John Dunn and the Jazzmen band for Jazz on the Lawn Nov. 3 from 5:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. at the Wray-Nicholson House. Celebrate UGA Homecoming 2007 as the sun sets on Athens.

2008 Multicultural Alumni Conference
Mark your calendars for Feb. 22 - 24, 2008 for MAC '08 at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. All former members of the African American Choral Ensemble are encouraged to perform in the 20th Anniversary Concert. Also, all former counselors of BEST will gather for a reunion as a part of the conference.


Bailey Legacy

For Stella Williams Bailey '69, '71 of Calhoun, Ga., attending a UGA home game is a family reunion of sorts.

Stella is married to William (Bill) Bailey '69 Political Science, '71 JD, whom she met while a student. Her family is loaded with three generations of UGA alumni who are die-hard Bulldog fans. Stella majored in Family and Consumer Sciences and then earned her master's degree in Family and Child Development. She now heads up her own business as a professional speaker and personal development consultant. She has been the keynote speaker for numerous events including the state Chamber of Commerce and leads seminars and workshops all over the state. She has written a children's book, "Confidence is Cool."


UGA's Greatest Generation
In an effort to recognize the "Greatest Generation" World War II veterans, the UGA Alumni Association is sponsoring a special project which will include collecting "war stories" from alumni, staff, and faculty who have personal memories from the war years. Dr. Leander K. Powers '35
Dr. Leander K. Powers BS '35, is a member of UGA's Greatest Generation. At 93 years-old, he still has his general practice in Savannah that he started in 1945.

Dr. Powers received his M.D. from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta in 1940. His late wife, the former Pauline Cargill, and their five children all went to UGA. One of his daughters, Polly Powers Stramm '77, ABJ of Savannah, shared the following information with us.

"My father served in southern Italy during World War II and kept a detailed wartime diary. What follows is an excerpt about Mount Vesuvius erupting. Daddy also was mentioned by name in the book 'Brave Men,' by war correspondent Ernie Pyle."
