The UGA Alumni Association and a group of seniors have formed SoloSENIORS to foster interaction and networking among mature single professionals. The group is open to unmarried men and women at least 50 years of age who are members of the UGA Alumni Association. Alum Received NOVA Award
Bob Akins '78 was selected to receive a NOVA award from Lockheed Martin. The NOVA is the corporation's highest honor for individual acheivement. Less than one-half of one percent of the corporation's 140,000 worldwide employees receive the honor each year. Akins has been at the forefront of creating and embedding the Full Spectrum Leadership brand and has been the driving force in the design and implementation of the Energize and Engage Employees (E3) initiative across the electronic systems business area of Lockheed Martin.

Jacksonville Chapter
Makes Substantial Gift to Association

Members of the UGA Alumni Association Jacksonville Chapter made a $5,000 contribution to the UGA Alumni Association's endowed scholarship fund. This is the first gift by any of the Association's more than 90 Chapters and Clubs.

Fulton County Chapter
Leading Membership Mania

The Fulton County Chapter is currently leading Membership Mania and on its way to claiming the $500 prize that awaits the UGA Alumni Chapter or Club that signs up the most new members during the five-month membership drive. The contest ends Dec. 31, 2007.

*UGA Educator Appreciation Program
If you are a teacher or administrator who graduated from UGA, the Alumni Association wants to recognize you. Educators in the Athens/Clarke/Oconee areas contact Wanda Darden, those in the metro Atlanta area, contact Meredith Carr '00 and the Association will organize a UGA Educator Appreciation event at your school.

Darius Weems Proclamation
A proclamation was presented by John Finley, Associate Executive Director of the Alumni Association to the crew members of "Darius Goes West: The Roll of His Life" July 22 during the celebration of Darius Goes West Day, the two year anniversary of the road trip taken to raise awareness of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. "Darius Goes West: The Roll of His Life" has been screened at 24 film festivals worldwide and has won 20 awards.

RFBD Learning Through Listening Tours
The UGA Alumni Association is proud of the University's affiliation with the Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic (RFBD) program. The Association encourages you to take part in the RFBD Listening Tours scheduled for Oct. 10 at 8:30 a.m. at 120 Florida Ave., Athens, Ga. The sessions usually last about an hour and are informal. UGA Capital Campaign
The University of Georgia has surpassed the $500 million milestone in its Archway to Excellence Campaign. President Michael F. Adams praised the commitment of alumni and friends who helped the university reach its target early, but said the fundraising effort will continue according to its original time frame. Contribute to this year's goal of 10 tons, by bringing pet food to your regional Game Watching Parties or contact your local Chapter or Club president about a drop-off location for your donation to the Dawgs Feeding Dogs Campaign. Cat food is also appreciated.

Join fellow UGA graduates and enthusiasts to watch the televised football games. Check your Chapter or Club Web site for details. If you are traveling, remember you can attend any UGA activity that is taking place. This is a great way to always "feel at home" across this great Bulldog Nation.

Nichole Hancock '98 is currently the President/CEO & Founder of the first-ever "Shades of Pink Breast Cancer Survivors Mass Choir" (formerly known as the Metro Atlanta Breast Cancer Survivors Mass Choir) where she is committed to "changing the face of breast cancer" and what it means to be "breast cancer survivors."

2008 Multicultural Alumni Conference
Mark your calendars for Feb. 22 - 24, 2008 for MAC '08 at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. All former members of the African American Choral Ensemble are encouraged to perform in the 20th Anniversary Concert. Also, all former counselors of BEST will gather for a reunion as a part of the conference.


Poitevint Legacy
Meg Poitevint '01 is a fourth generation UGA alumna who serves on the development staff of the UGA Law School. She was asked to share her Bulldog legacy at a recent staff meeting and shared the following: "Six years ago, I was the fourth generation of my family to graduate from this institution. I was a Phi Mu as the three generations before me…"

"...Combining my mother's family and my father's family, more than 30 of us attended the University of Georgia. The [family] question is, 'who enjoyed [UGA] the most?' I, of course, would like to claim this [family title] for many reasons.


UGA's Greatest Generation
In an effort to recognize the "Greatest Generation" World War II veterans, the UGA Alumni Association is sponsoring a special project which will include collecting "war stories" from alumni, staff, and faculty who have personal memories from the war years. Lamar T. Wansley '39
Lamar T. Wansley '39, a member of UGA's Greatest Generation, passed away May 30, 2007. Following is a special memoir written by Loran Smith '62 ABJ and published in the June 21, 2007 edition of the "Athens Banner Herald." (It is used with the author's permission.)

Virginia Ann Wansley Darden '65 ED, was two-years-old before she ever met her daddy, Lamar. A native of Carnesville, Lamar Wansley was commissioned through the University of Georgia's Army ROTC program in 1939 and reported for airborne training in January, 1942. His wife, Ruth, was pregnant with Virginia Ann when Wansley was sent to England for pre-invasion training in 1943.
