“SEC Challenge” Fundraising Competition
The University of Georgia is contacting all graduates since 1996 to fend off Gators, Vols, Tigers, Rebels, Wildcats and even the Gamecocks in the inaugural "SEC Challenge" fund-raising competition. Nine of the 12 SEC schools will compete to determine how loyal its young alumni will be in the coming year. The competition is not based on the total amount of gifts made, but the percentage of gifts from alumni that graduated in the past ten years. UGA hopes to win the competition which runs from July 1, 2005, until June 30, 2006, but more importantly it hopes to bolster alumni giving rates, particularly among recent graduates.

This is the 8th National Two Baton Championship title Hope has won and will be her fourth trip to Worlds. At the last three World Championships, Hope has brought home two gold medals and a silver medal for the USA. She is also the 2004 Grand National Collegiate Twirling Champion.

This was the fifth consecutive year for record-high private gifts and pledges, and puts UGA on the brink of realizing a long-sought goal of garnering $100 million in private gifts in a single year.

'98, Associate Professor of Political Science and Assistant Director of Latino/Latin American Studies at the University of Nebraska at Omaha to campus. Rather than focusing on the question of the national immigration policy, this talk focuses on the critical tasks facing these communities across the United States, those being: immigrant integration, providing appropriate education resources and ensuring fair and equitable employment opportunities. The speaker will offer his on-the-ground experience from his work in Omaha; his observations of Latino immigration as a social scientist; and his reflections on the prospects and challenges arising from the Latino explosion. Prior to the lecture Dr. Benjamin-Alvarado will host a Brown Bag Luncheon at the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies from 12pm to 1pm.

Darius Goes West
For three weeks this summer, Darius Weems, a rising sophomore at Clarke Central High School toured the nation with a group of UGA students, as part of the "Darius Goes West" Project. Fifteen-year-old Weems is confined to a wheelchair by Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a degenerative condition that first weakens skeletal and voluntary muscles in the arms, legs and body and then, eventually, heart and respiratory muscles. UGA students Dylan Wilson, Logan Smalley, John Harmon and alum, Daniel Epting '03 met Weems at Project REACH, a summer camp for disabled children and decided to take their friend on a cross-country journey that would take them to Louisiana, the Grand Canyon, Carlsbad Cavern, the beaches of Florida, the St. Louis Arch and Las Vegas.
The high point of the trip was supposed to be a stop at MTV Studios in Los Angeles, where they hoped the music television station would agree to include Weems on its "Pimp My Ride" show, which outfits cars with the latest technological and showy gear. But MTV declined to "pimp" Weems' chair, so Full EFX Auto Techniques of Atlanta surprised him with a tricked-out wheelchair when he and his crew got back to Atlanta.
Although there were a lot of cool sights to see along the way, the most amazing was the almost constant smile Weems had on his face throughout the trip, said Logan Smalley. "We saw a differnt thing every day," Smalley said. "But the best thing I saw on the whole trip was the smile on Darius' face. He was the glue that held this whole trip together."
Now the trip is over, Weems will be embarking on a new adventure as he starts his sophomore year of high school this fall. And when he heads back to class, he'll have to leave some of his chair's more fun features at home.

My girlfriend, a fellow Bulldog, and I just returned from a trip to Spain. While walking down a street in Barcelona we were surprised to see a shirt hanging on a mannequin in a trendy boutique window with "Georgia Bulldogs" printed out. We took a picture. It was a cool find - we had no idea Georgia sportswear was becoming chic in Europe. I thought you might be able to use the picture for the newsletter or otherwise.
Thanks.
