UGA's Greatest Generation
In an effort to recognize the "Greatest Generation" World War II veterans, the UGA Alumni Association is sponsoring a special project which will include collecting "war stories" from alumni, staff, and faculty who have personal memories from the war years. If you have a memory you would like included in this project, please send it via email to Claude McBride '55 or mail to Claude McBride, UGA Alumni Association, Wray-Nicholson House, 298 Hull St., Athens, GA 30602.
Marion Stegeman Hodgson, '41, is one of UGA's most unique World War II veterans. She was one of the first women to train for the Army Air Corps.
Marion grew up in Athens and was the daughter of the University's legendary coach H. J. Stegeman for whom Stegeman Hall was named. She graduated in 1941, the year of Pearl Harbor, and earned her pilot's license while a student at the University.
The following year, the government issued a call for licensed women pilots to volunteer for Air Corps flight training. She volunteered in March, 1943 and reported to Sweetwater, Texas where she was one of the first classes of women to train for the Army Air Forces as a WASP (Women's Airforce Service Pilot). After six months of intensive training night and day, she received her silver wings and was ordered to Love Field, Dallas, Texas. Please visit our Greatest Generation page for the full story.
