Elizabeth L. Schuchs-Gopaul, Major, USAF
Staff Judge Advocate, 506th Air Expeditionary Group
Kirkuk AB, Iraq

"I am presently serving as the Staff Judge Advocate with the 506th Air Expeditionary Group at Kirkuk AB, Iraq. I graduated from UGA with an ABJ in 1993 and JD in 1996. I was a proud member of the Phi Kappa Literary Society while I was there.

I have been a member of the Air Force Judge Advocate Corps since my graduation from law school in 1996. I just ran across your website and it made me smile. When I saw CPT Carter raise that flag in Baghdad a year ago, I had no idea I would get my own trip to the sandbox. Iraq is a beautiful place that is full of history. They deserve peace in their life time. Those who serve are hoping to give them that chance. Thanks again for the smile."

EMERGENCY SAFETY TIPS FOR UGA FOOTBALL FANS
Sanford Stadium now holds 92,600 people. On game day when all goes well and the number 1 ranked home team in the country is winning it is the only place to be. But if disaster strikes Sanford Stadium becomes a confined space with thousands of people attempting to get out simultaneously.

UGA has worked hard to plan for emergencies at the stadium and has involved community emergency responders, such as the Athens Regional Medical Center, St. Mary's Hospital, and the ACC Fire Department.

Here's what you can do to help yourself in the event of a disaster:

Each fan should know at least 2 ways in and out of the stadium in the event your usual passageway is compromised or inaccessible.

Listen to public address announcements for instructions in the event of an emergency.

Follow the directions of uniformed public safety officials in the event of an emergency.

Know the location of the nearest First Aid Station to you.
First Aid Stations are located at:
Gate 10 (Tate Student Center);
East 100 Level/Room 119;
North 200 Level/Room 202;
South 200 Level/Room 233; and

If your organization would like more information on safety in Sanford Stadium please contact Dena Roth, the Emergency Operations Manager, at 369-5625 or by e-mail at droth@esd.uga.edu. She would be glad to come and speak to your organization.

THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA GARDENS

Claude McBride '55, former UGA Alumni Association Tour Director, is a veritable repository of campus lore and is now assisting us in writing a wonderful new column entitled "Claude's Campus Candids." These stories will encompass reminiscent walks down UGA's memory lane, perspectives on UGA traditions and the unexpected small things that make this campus so powerful to so many.

"Your entire campus is a beautiful garden!"

This observation made by an out-of-town friend on her first visit to Athens caught my attention. It's true. Those of us who live in the Classic City tend to take little notice, but our campus is an exceptionally handsome site.

Founders' Garden

Most people know about our State Botanical Garden and the Founder's Memorial Garden, but few are aware of other gardens and recent beautification efforts -- a priority of President Michael Adams.

The Main or North campus, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is actually a large inspiring park. Its towering oaks and spreading magnolias shadow walkways and spacious lawns with historic buildings flanking its borders. The pleasing ambiance beckons to students and others who visit, study, relax and even tailgate on its grounds.

Herty Field

The entire campus was declared a national Arboretum in 2000 with three designated tree walks, one each on North Campus, Central Campus and South Campus. Former Athletic Director Vince Dooley helped with this project.

Appropriate trees, ornamentals, shrubs, ground covers and flowers create inspiring focal points all over campus. Many former students who return for a visit are impressed with Herty Field, once a paved parking lot, now a massive landscaped lawn with a huge fountain in the center. This area in front of Candler Hall was the site of early football games and a drill field for the ROTC Calvary in other days.

Hubert Owens Memorial Fountain and Garden

Another beautiful fountain, honors the memory of the late Dr. Hubert Owens, former University professor and internationally known landscape architect who designed the Founder's Memorial Garden (also on North Campus). This fountain has been placed in the center of an attractive courtyard at the east end of Old College between the Administrative Building and the Lustrat House. The original plans were drawn by the late Dr. Owens.

The President's Club Garden

Old College, which observes its 200th birthday this year, is the centerpiece for the large park (North Campus). On the south side of the building is the President's Garden with an attractive monument honoring major donors and is surrounded by shrubs and flowers which bloom seasonally.

On the South Campus, D.W. Brooks Mall replaced D.W. Brooks Drive when the pavement was removed and replaced with a beautiful green space featuring walks amid trees, shrubs and other plantings. The Mall stretches four blocks from Carlton Street to Green Street.

D.W. Brooks Mall

In addition, there has been extensive landscaping along Baxter and Lumpkin Streets featuring ornamental black wrought iron fencing, ornamentals, showy grasses, ground covers and other plantings.

The Coliseum and surrounding grounds boasts lush trees including the Towns Oak from the Black Forest of Germany, a large beautiful monument to Athletics erected for the Olympics, manicured lawns and impressive floral plots.

The Georgia Center for Continuing Education has its own Grounds staff and their work draws constant raves because of the extensive use of color and unusual shrubs in designs that surround the complex.

A real serendipity that few people know about is the startling display of beautiful colorful annuals and perennials in the Experimental Gardens of the Horticulture department, located between Snelling Hall and the College of Pharmacy.

A large formal garden, dating from the turn of the century, has been restored at the Wray-Nicholson House on South Hull Street across from Holiday Inn. The garden was originally planted as a memorial to Mrs. Lucy Nicholson, a founding member of the Athens Ladies Garden Club -- the first in America.

UGA Horticultural Department's Experimental Gardens

The new East Campus features an unbelievably pleasing panorama of striking new buildings complimented by a variety of trees, ornamental shrubs, ground covers and flowers.

Maintaining our beautiful campus is the responsibility of Dexter Adams '76, Director of the Grounds Department. Adams heads up a staff of 95 employees including Landscape Designer David Hale '80 and Chris Swann '95 who plans most of the floral designs.

If you haven't toured the UGA campus recently, you should plan a visit to your alma mater and "smell the roses." Perhaps you will agree with our out-of-town guest: "The entire campus is a beautiful garden" -- in which all alumni can take pride.

Claude also writes legacy stories that are also featured in the UGA Alumni Association's E-newsletter and on our Web Site. If you have an interesting legacy story please e-mail Claude at cmcbride@uga.edu.
