*New Art Exhibit: Chromatiglass
The Alumni Association's new art exhibit features the work of Susan Hamby Kridler '87 who explains the collection and the style called Chromatiglass Painting as, "suspending acrylic paint and mixed media between panes of glass." Chromatiglass is on display at the UGA Alumni Association Atlanta Alumni Center.

*Atlanta 2-Day Walk
Join the UGA Alumni DAWGS Team for the Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer on September 16-17. Founded by two-time breast cancer survivor and UGA parent Randi Passoff the Atlanta 2-Day Walk raises money that stays in Atlanta for breast cancer support, research, financial assistance and awareness programs.

*UGA College Football Preview Luncheon
The UGA Alumni Association invites you to join the Atlanta Sports Council on July 14 to kick off the 2006 Football season with UGA Head Football Coach and 2005 SEC Coach of the Year Mark Richt, ESPN College Gameday Sportscaster Lee Corso and Atlanta Journal-Constitution Sports writer Tony Barnhart. Student Alumni Council Open Enrollment
The UGA Alumni Association Student Alumni Council (SAC) open enrollment begins on August 1, 2006. All applications are due by November 22, 2006. SAC members serve as campus leaders to enhance the relationship between UGA students and alumni by promoting university traditions, instilling pride, bolstering spirit, fostering community and educating leaders on and off campus. with a Dozen Dawgs

Student Programs is seeking alumni, faculty and staff who live in or are willing to travel to the Athens area to host a Dinner with a Dozen Dawgs. One of the Association's most popular programs, Dinner with a Dozen Dawgs helps personalize the UGA experience. Hosts open their homes or provide a venue to students, faculty, and fellow alumni for a small dinner, bringing everyone together for good food, conversation and Bulldog camaraderie. In May 2006 Peggy Carter '73 joined the Forsyth Medical Center Foundation in Winston-Salem, NC as vice president of development.

Earlier in May, Carter was recognized with the President's Award by the NAACP of Winston-Salem. In addition, she was recognized as a Woman of Vision by the YWCA in 2005 and was named one of nine Outstanding Women in the community.

*Advice for the College Years
Is there something you did that each student should experience during his or her college career like work-study, Greek life, or live on campus? Or is there something you wish you had done, such as taking a semester to study abroad or not open five credit card? Help the UGA Alumni Association create "If I Only Knew Then: Advice for the College Years," the counterpart to the Association's award-winning book, "If I Only Knew Then: Advice from Alumni to the Class of 2006." The College Years advice book will be distributed to all first-year students. Advice is due October 1, but don't wait, submit it today using the online form.

If you have published a book in the last 24 months, please contact Robert Newsome at the UGA Bookstore at rnewsome@uga.edu with publication information by September 1st. A copy of your book will be displayed at the UGA Bookstore during the third annual UGA Faculty and Staff Authors Reception on Wednesday, September 27 at 3:30 p.m. For more information call Alice Vernon at 542-2251.

Countdown to Kickoff Benefit
Join Matt '98 and Jon Stinchcomb '02, current and former UGA and pro-football players, UGA athletes and families for a day of autographs, pictures, games and good times during the inaugural Countdown to Kickoff on July 15 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the UGA Practice Fields. All proceeds benefit Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, the University of Georgia College of Educations and the Georgia Transplant Foundations.

Redcoats, Home Away from Home in China
During the Redcoat Band's recent trip to China, a country where the band did not expect anyone to understand what it means to "Call the Dawgs," they were pleasantly surprised to see a group of avid Dawg fans made up of Chad Middlebrooks '99 and his family in the Chengdu stadium. The Redcoats were a "treat" for the spectators in China, especially the Middlebrooks family.

Dr. Janet E. Wall '73 who earned her Ed.S. in Science Education, Educational Research, and Testing, has written, "Job Seeker's Online Goldmine: A Step-by-Step Guidebook to Government and No-Cost Web Tools." The president of Sage Solutions in Rockville, MD, Dr. Wall is an expert on career development and government career information.

*Save the Date for First Friday!
Make plans to attend the 2006 First Friday Pep Ralley to fire up the dawgs on Friday, September 1 at Stegeman Coliseum. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. and the event will start at 5:30 p.m. with special appearances from Coach Mark Richt, the UGA Football Team, Damon Evans, UGA Alumni Association President Swann Seiler '78, Uga VI, Hairy Dawg, the UGA Cheerleaders, Flagline, Feature Twirlers, and more.


UGA's Greatest Generation
In an effort to recognize the “Greatest Generation” World War II veterans, the UGA Alumni Association is sponsoring a special project which will include collecting “war stories” from alumni, staff and faculty who have personal memories from the war years. If you have a memory you would like to be part of this project, which will culminate in a special emphasis during Veteran’s Week observances this year, please send it via email to Claude McBride ’55 or mail to Claude McBride, UGA Alumni Association, Wray-Nicholson House, 298 Hull St., Athens, GA 30602.

Dan Magill '42 ABJ, one of the UGA's favorite and most colorful characters, is a proud member of America's greatest generation.

Magill, widely known and respected former Sports Information Director, Associate Athletic Director, and Tennis Coach, headed the effort to establish the Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame and is responsible for its being located in Athens. In 1983 the facility was built at the UGA Tennis Center where he presently serves as curator.

The amiable coach founded the Georgia Bulldog Clubs throughout the state and in other major cities in the Southeast and has authored two books, "BULL-DOGGERAL," about colorful players and coaches at the University, and "MATCH-POINTERS," which includes stories about famous tennis players and offers tips for young tennis players.

A third book which chronicles his experiences in the U.S. Marines during World War II is scheduled to be released this fall. Please visit our Greatest Generation page for the full story.


Former U.S. Department of Commerce Deputy Secretary
to teach course at UGA School of Law

This fall, former U.S. Department of Commerce deputy secretary Theodore (Ted) W. Kassinger '78 will teach an international trade law and policy course at the University of Georgia School of Law.

 

UGA Relay for Life Success
Thanks to all the alumni who donated to UGA Relay For Life, a record amount of $255,000 was raised. The UGA Relay for Life is the number one College Relay for the seventh year in a row.

Freshmen Send-Off Parties
This fall, thousands of students will begin their college careers at the University of Georgia. Before the UGA Class of 2010 leave their hometowns many will receive a special Freshmen Send-Off Party hosted by their local alumni. Check your chapter or club for details. Alumni are invited to attend.

Uga Turns 50
Throughout the month of August various alumni chapters and clubs will be celebrating 50 Years of Uga by gathering to view the "Damned Good Dog" DVD. Check your chapter or club page for details.

*Creatively Speaking
Join us for the Creatively Speaking conversation at Georgia State University on Wednesday, July 19 at 12p.m. in the auditorium of the Student Center Building. Jason Carter '04, grandson of former President Jimmy Carter and Zaziwe Dlamnini Manaday, granddaughter of former South African President Nelson Mandela will have a conversation about various issues. Reception to follow, co-sponsored by the UGA Alumni Association and the GSU/Andrew Young School of Public Policy.

Alumni Assist with Diversity Recruiting
UGA has another strong year in recruiting diverse students for its upcoming Freshmen class. The UGA Alumni Association appreciates the efforts of alumni volunteers who made calls and sent emails, encouraging high school seniors admitted to UGA to enroll into the university. In addition, the alumni volunteers helped host receptions in Tifton, Savannah, Augusta, Columbus, Athens, Atlanta and Macon.
