Bulldogs Helping Bulldogs... UGA Atlanta Alumni Center
Receives Alumni Assistance with Internet Wireless Services

UGA alums Keith Herndon '82 and Robert Haag '93 recently collaborated to provide the Atlanta Alumni Center with free wireless internet. Upon visiting the Center last Fall, Herndon, a past Association board member, was surprised to find there were no wireless capabilities. He generously offered his services in procuring a wireless provider. Herndon worked with 3rd Wave, an Atlanta wireless hotspot provider and company contact (and fellow alumnus) Robert Haag, to gain the necessary Association services at no cost. The wireless system was installed in June and in return for these alums' generosity, the Association offers them one free meeting room a month.

Both Herndon and Haag are graduates of Grady College of Journalism. In fact, Herndon was Haag's mentor in 1992 through Conrad Fink's mentoring program. They stayed in touch over the years and when Herndon came to the center and realized there was not wireless internet service he immediately thought of Haag and Ripple as the perfect wireless solution. Herndon is the president of Internet Decisions LLC. Internet Decisions made a financial contribution to help offset the monthly internet service cost.

UGA welcomes all new students to campus during Orientation 2005. All new students will attend an Orientation session prior to enrolling. The Orientation program is designed to help and prepare new students for a successful beginning at UGA by providing them with information about the academic and extracurricular opportunities and challenges ahead.

Students should leave Orientation with: an understanding of UGA's academic opportunities and expectations, awareness of the diverse extracurricular opportunities and University services, a UGACard, UGA MyID, and a schedule of classes, new friends among your future classmates, and a proud sense of connection as a new member of the UGA "family" of 33,000 students, 9,000 faculty and staff, and more than 200,000 living alumni around the world.

It is also a great time for new students to learn about the UGA Alumni Association and what our student membership has to offer.

Please visit the Association's table at the Resource Fair during each session. During Orientation, the UGA Alumni Association gives every new student a "Proud to say Georgia" booklet which is full of the UGA history and traditions that every UGA student and alumni holds dear.

Claude's Legacy Story on the Birchmore family slowly brought back memories that are still dim and thought maybe you could help bring them into focus. I vaguely remember Fred Birchmore as a friend of my parents and his story of around the world on a bicycle, which sounded so exciting to me. We visited Athens often when I was a child as my mother was Extension Agent with Dept of Agriculture and '25 graduate. But I think my memories of Mr. Birchmore and his wife were at our home in Brunswick and St Simons. My husband, William Posey, '58, and I live in Fort Myers, FL now, enjoying retirement and grandchildren. My parents were Bernice Echols Grant and Earl Grant in case his children have any memories of them. Thanks for a great blast from the past and would appreciate any more info.

I've been thinking all day about the passing of our own hero, Noah Harris '03 in Iraq, praying for him and his family and the cause of freedom and our security that he died for.

I wanted to both suggest and volunteer: I really believe that as an organization we can and should do something to honor our heroes...I think that there must be some special way that as an organization we can show our thanks. I just wanted to suggest/propose that we do so, and volunteer to help in any capacity appropriate.
