CLOSING RECEPTION
On behalf on the UGA Office of Institutional Diversity and the UGA
Alumni Association, UGA alumni and friends are invited to a reception
closing the exhibit, Bold Improvisation: 120 Years of African-American
Quilts From the Collection of Scott Heffley on Sunday, July 18 from 3 to
5 PM at the Georgia Museum of Art on the University of Georgia campus.
Bold Improvisation celebrates the rich tradition of African American
quilt making, and presents an opportunity to examine the creativity and craft inherent in these
textiles. Bright colors, clashing prints, and a tension between balance and imbalance all lend a
sense of exuberance to these quilted works of art. The fabrics used in the quilts in this exhibition
range from coarse feed sacks and bank moneybags, to rich velvets and stylish modern printed rayons. The quilts in this exhibition come from the collection of Scott Heffley, conservator of paintings at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas
City.
Live music will be provided by UGA alumnae and faculty member, Paige
Carmichael '94 accompanied by Faith Carmichael. Come join UGA alumni
and friends with food and fellowship while enjoying this exciting exhibit.
For more information and to RSVP, contact Shirley Reyes by July 14 at
(706) 583-8195 or diverse@uga.edu.

William Arthur (Art) Brady
|
When William Arthur (Art) Brady, a rising senior at UGA, was
accepted into Grady College this Spring, he became a third generation journalism legacy.
Both his mother, Madge S. Brady '68, and his grandmother,
Madge Sewell Bellinger '39 majored in journalism at The University of Georgia.
Brady, a tele-communications major, is serving an internship with WSB-TV in Atlanta this summer.

(TOP) Grandmother Madge Sewell Bellinger '39.
(BOTTOM) Mother Madge Sewell Brady '68
|
 |
He is a graduate of Woodward Academy in his hometown of Atlanta, where he excelled
in academics and athletics and was the recipient of the prestigious George Woodruff
Award for two years. At UGA, Brady is a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity, active in College
Young Republicans and intramural sports.
His mother, "little Madge," is marketing coordinator for Delta Employees
Credit Union, and his grandmother, Madge Bellinger, of St. Simons Island
is a retired newspaper woman. Mrs. Bellinger is a "double" third generation
grandmother. A granddaughter, Elizabeth Madray, of Houston, Texas is a
rising sophomore at UGA. Her parents are Ashley '80 and Lee Sewell Madray
'80, both UGA alumni who were featured in an earlier legacy article.
When Brady finished High School, he had a wide choice of
colleges. Several actively recruited him. "I'm glad I came to UGA,"
he says. "I've been happy since the first day."
Claude McBride '55, former UGA Alumni Association Tour Director is a veritable repository of campus
lore and is now assisting us in writing legacy stories such as the one above. If you have an interesting
legacy story please e-mail Claude at cmcbride@uga.edu.
