UGA's Greatest Generation
In an effort to recognize the “Greatest Generation” World War II veterans, the UGA Alumni Association is sponsoring a special project which will include collecting “war stories” from alumni, staff and faculty who have personal memories from the war years. If you have a memory you would like to be part of this project, which will culminate in a special emphasis during Veteran’s Week observances this year, please send it via email to Claude McBride ’55 or mail to Claude McBride, UGA Alumni Association, Wray-Nicholson House, 298 Hull St., Athens, GA 30602.

Norval Caples '53 chose a unique way to remember his part in World War II. He recorded his experiences in a special booklet published and distributed to his family and friends...

...He recalls numerous experiences in combat and explains that his living compartment was located directly beneath a large gun turret, and "when those guns were fired, our whole area would vibrate viciously, dislodging the fireproof material covering steam pipes overhead. We'd return to find our bunks covered with pieces of insulation and the area would be hazy, as though in a deep fog, from the particles of asbestos and spun glass insulation material suspended and dancing in the air we breathed." Please visit our Greatest Generation page for the full story.

McCay Legacy

When Megan McCay received her degree on May 13, she became not only a UGA alumna, but also a fourth generation legacy.

A psychology major, Megan plans to pursue her Masters degree at UGA and hopes to become an elementary school counselor, following a family tradition as an education professional.

The legacy began with Edward Lee (E.L.) McCay, who graduated from the university in 1907. A Bulldog athlete, E.L. grew up in Danielsville and according to family lore, played in the first intercollegiate football game he ever saw. He said he was recruited by his teacher, Dr. Steadman V. Sanford, who later became chancellor and for whom the UGA stadium is named. E.L. is pictured in the college yearbook, the “Pandora” with the 1905-06 football team.
