LUMPKIN HOUSE
Alumni returning to the campus after being away for a while are amazed at the tremendous change that has taken place. The recent new construction of multi-million dollar state-of-the-art facilities and widespread renovation of old buildings astound them.

But it is the unchanged parts of the campus that stir old memories and gives them a nostalgic sense of history and stability. For instance, North Campus with the Arch, Chapel, Old College and other buildings remain as it was when they were students - spruced up - but basically the same. In fact the entire North Campus is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

One building they can count on remaining unchanged is the historic Lumpkin House on South Campus. The building, made of native stone, was completed in 1844. When it was sold to the University in 1907 along with adjacent land, the deed stipulated that if the house were ever removed from the premises or destroyed manually, the entire property would revert to the Lumpkin heirs.

So the house, dwarfed by Conner Hall on one side and the Science Center on the other, stands proudly - defying the years - a link between our glorious past and promising future. Those unaware of the stipulations of the original deed wonder why it's there. It looks so out of place.

The house was the home of Wilson Lumpkin, one of Georgia's most illustrious citizens. A native of nearby Oglethorpe County, he served two terms as governor of the state, was U.S. senator, member of the Georgia General Assembly, congressman, commissioner to the Cherokee Indians, state railroad agent, and a trustee for UGA. He has a county and one of Athens' busiest streets named for him.

Few men have had greater influence upon our state. He was a respected senator, able governor, was given credit for the development of the railroad in our state and proved to be an effective administrator in negotiating the Indian Treaty of 1835.

He personally designed his dream home which was to be constructed on land he had purchased near the UGA campus. He imported various masons, carpenters and other artisans to build it as the center point of his impressive farm which began at Tanyard Creek (present day parking lot of the Tate Center) and included what is now our south campus. It was bounded on the East by the Oconee River and on the west by the "road from Athens to Watkinsville" (now Lumpkin Street). He named it "Cedar Hill."

The construction of the house began in 1842 and required two years for completion. It included 12 rooms with fireplaces, a cellar, pantry, and five large closets. The walls were made of especially hewn stone and were two feet thick.

Lumpkin died in 1870. His youngest daughter, Martha, lived in the house with her husband when the University purchased the property. Representing UGA in the sale was Chancellor David C. Barrow, Jr., her great nephew. Of special note is the fact that Atlanta was originally named Terminus because the first railroad ended there. The name was changed to Marthasville (for Gov. Lumpkin's daughter) and later to Atlanta.

There are many sources with information regarding Governor Lumpkin, but for a cryptic review of details regarding him and his house, consult "Historic Houses of Athens" by Charlotte Thomas Marshall.

At any rate, be assured that the Lumpkin House or as I prefer "Cedar Hill" will maintain its place throughout the coming decades.

If you have an interesting legacy story please e-mail Claude McBride '55 at cmcbride@uga.edu.
