Department of Genetics 25th Anniversary
The UGA Department of Genetics celebrated its 25th anniversary this April. It was also the 90th birthday of Professor Norman Giles, the senior member of the initial group of the faculty who founded the department. The UGA Alumni Association presented a gift basket to Department Head, Dr. Robert Ivarie, in celebration of their milestone and Professor Giles's birthday.

UGA School of Music named for Hugh Hodgson
The University of Georgia's School of Music will be named for Hugh Hodgson, a renowned Athens resident and UGA professor who founded UGA's music department and championed music appreciation and performance throughout the state.

Hodgson was born in Athens in 1893 and graduated from UGA in 1915. His appointment in 1928 as the university's first music professor is considered the start of the music department. He remained on the faculty until he retired in 1960. He developed four degree programs in music including the first graduate degree, a master's in fine arts in music, was the first chairman of the university's division of fine arts and was named a Regents Professor of Music by the University System Board of Regents.

Among his many contributions, Hodgson composed the arrangement for the University of Georgia Alma Mater and wrote the words for the fight song "Glory to Old Georgia." He was instrumental in construction of the Fine Arts Building, and helped establish the Atlanta and Savannah symphony orchestras.

A ceremonial announcement of the naming occurred on April 1, which would have been Hodgson's 112th birthday, and a formal dedication will take place at the school this fall.

UGA Dedicates Memorial Garden

"I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy the on-line newsletter. It's visually pleasing, easy to navigate and always interesting."
-Andrea Parris '83

"The UGA Alumni e-newsletter seems to be getting more readable and informative every month. For foreign Alumni like me who live so far away from UGA, this is a virtual tour of the campus and enables us to re-live our fond memories of UGA."
-Vikash Chandra '81, '82

"Thank you so much for including our story in your newsletter. It has already made a huge difference in donations and the coverage in the newsletter was excellent. We at Dariusgoeswest really appreciate it!"
-Logan Smalley

"Your nice story about Robert Toombs and his association with UGA was perused with more than casual interest since he was a minor character of reference in J. W. - Alive As Long As He Lived. Please go to page xix in the Prologue and see the relationship between Toombs and Welcome Fanning, J. W.'s great, great grandfather. Robert Toombs was a student of Welcome Fanning's in Washington, GA. After having been disciplined very sternly by Fanning, Toombs told a fellow student, "I am going to beat the hell out of Fanning when I get big." Years later when asked about his promise to whip Fanning, Toombs remarked, "No I never did get THAT big."

Later during the Civil War, J. W.'s grandfather was serving in unit under General Robert Toombs command, and in a letter written to his Aunt Martha (written by J. W.'s grandfather), he stated, "They say General Robert Toombs would know the results by Monday evening. He said the hardest fighting will be the next day.''
-Gene Younts
