UGA Press Book of the Month
"Winners Have Yet to Be Announced," poems by Ed Pavlic. UGA Press is pleased to be working with Ed Pavlic, newly appointed director of the MFA/PhD program in creative writing at UGA, on his new book. This moving collection of prose poems about seventies soul singer Donny Hathaway presents a complex view of a gifted artist through imagined conversations and interviews that convey the voices, surroundings and clashing dimensions of Hathaway's life.

Career Center Unveils New Recruiting Website
More than 8,000 students graduate each year from UGA, offering employers a deep and diverse talent pool to meet the recruiting needs of any organization. The Career Center has launched a new website designed to make it even easier to tap into this talent. Use www.hireUGA.com to post positions for students and alumni, register for upcoming career fairs, take advantage of on-campus interviewing, host an information session about your company, connect with students for internships, part-time employment and job shadowing experiences.

43rd Annual Atlanta Steeplechase
Put on your seersucker and don your hats for the ultimate dog and pony show April 12, 2008. Proceeds from the event go toward building a new hospital for animals and supporting the educational programs of the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine. Alumni ordering tickets online through Ticketmaster will receive $5 off the price of each $30 general admission ticket which includes parking. School of Environmental Design 2008 Alumni Weekend
Register today for the School of Environmental Design Alumni Weekend April 18-19. In addition to celebrating the school's 80th Anniversary, the weekend activities and presentations have been carefully crafted to present a compelling look at topics and issues of sustainability within the professions of Landscape Architecture and Historic Preservation.

Oconee High School - Feb. 6
More than 40 educators were recognized and the Association presented Oconee High School Principal Mark Channell and Assistant Principals Roy Morris, Keith Smith, Glenn Townsend and Scott Woodall with a proclamation congratulating them and the school for the honor of holding the 2007 School of Excellence Award and being designated as one of only twelve highest-achieving schools in the state of Georgia.

Alaska on Silversea
June 12-21, 2008
Embark on an incredible journey. From Vancouver you will sail the Inside Passage, visit Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway before cruising Sawyer Glacier. After that you will visit Wrangell followed by Victoria, BC and then returning to Vancouver.



The UGA Alumni Association and a group of seniors have formed SoloSENIORS to foster interaction and networking among mature single professionals. The group is open to unmarried men and women at least 50 years of age who are members of the UGA Alumni Association. "Deciding for Yourself" Conference
The SoloSENIORS are hosting a special conference March 8 on aging, "Deciding for Yourself". This mini-conference will include presentations by Ellisa Garrett on preparing legal directives, Arthur Wyatt on choosing long term care options, and Tom Lord on making final arrangements. The goal of the conference is to encourage you to decide for yourself what you want, how it should happen, and who should be involved. .


The Women of UGA Program is designed to provide a forum for all women affiliated with the University of Georgia to connect with one another for personal and professional growth. Programming focuses on professional skill development, social activities, and community initiatives. All female students, faculty, staff, and alumnae are welcome to attend.

*"Workin' Like a Dawg Employee Breakfast"
The tenth annual breakfast will be held April 9 at at 7:30 a.m. at the Georgia Center Banquet area. Program will begin at 8:15 a.m. with service pins distributed for milestone years. *UGA Class of 1958 Reunion
Jim Cripps (BS'58) has already reserved his room for the 50-year-reunion of the Class of 1958 April 18, 2008 at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. Cripps, one of Florida's most recognized organists, majored in banking and finance while studying the pipe organ with Dr. Hugh Hodgson. He received the Wall Street Journal award for being the highest ranking graduate in his major and was elected to membership in Beta Gamma Sigma and Phi Kappa Phi. If you are a member of the Class of 1958, plan to join Jim and other classmates for a once-in-a-lifetime celebration. For more information, contact Claude McBride.

*Save the Date: UGA Night at Six Flags
The fifth annual UGA Night at Six Flags is April 18 and early bird tickets go on sale March 17 at the Tate Center Cashier's window or can be purchased online from the Campus Life website.

*Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day
The UGA Alumni Association is participating in the national Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work® program April 24. This program is recommended for girls and boys ages 8 - 18 years old. To participate, click here. Once you register, we will send you a school absence excuse form, suggested activities, and a form to send back to us about your experience. Stories and pictures will be posted on the UGA Alumni Association Website.

The UGA Alumni Association has formed an official group on the professional networking site, Linked in. There is no cost to join, but you must be an Association member. The goals are to help members:

UGA Capital Campaign
The University of Georgia has surpassed the $500 million milestone in its Archway to Excellence Campaign. President Michael F. Adams praised the commitment of alumni and friends who helped the university reach its target early, but said the fundraising effort will continue according to its original time frame. *SAA G-DAY Tailgate
Mark your calendar now for the spring scrimmage April 5 at Sanford Stadium known as G-Day! The SAA and SAC are hosting the first tailgate three hours prior to the game. There will be food, free t-shirts, music and dance performances by campus student groups.

*2008 Ring Ceremony
The UGA Alumni Association's Spring Ring Ceremony will be held April 20 at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education in Mahler Auditorium. Students will be presented with their rings which were ordered during the fall and spring. Reception will follow. Parents and guests are encouraged to attend.

SAC Members Attend CDC Event
Matt McGee '10 and Christina Swoope '10 attended the CDC Corporate Gathering in Atlanta with Diane Johnson '82, Associate Executive Director for Membership and the Atlanta Alumni Center.

Lowery Legacy

Dr. Darrell Lowrey (BS '72), an Orthopedist with the Harbin Clinic in Rome, Ga., is a member of a family that includes six UGA graduates.

Lowrey majored in Environmental Health at the University and his son, Barton, is currently a sophomore and daughter, Reagen (BBA '03), majored in Risk Management and Insurance.

In addition, he has two brothers and a sister who are alums including Dr. Robert Lowrey (BS '56), who received his degree in Animal Science and recently retired from the UGA Animal Science and Dairy Department and resides in Athens.


UGA's Greatest Generation
In an effort to recognize the "Greatest Generation" World War II veterans, the UGA Alumni Association is sponsoring a special project which will include collecting "war stories" from alumni, staff, and faculty who have personal memories from the war years. If you have a memory you would like included in this project, please send it via email to Claude McBride '55 or mail to Claude McBride, UGA Alumni Association, Wray-Nicholson House, 298 Hull St., Athens, GA 30602.

Captain Henry F. "Doc" Manget, Jr. '48, a member of UGA's greatest generation, one of our state's most honored combat veterans and a pioneer in Georgia aviation passed away July 2004.

Doc and his wife, the former Maie "Toy" Watkin, graduated from the University in 1948. They have three sons who are all UGA alumni: Frederick, (BA'73), Thomas, (BSA'77) and John, (BA'79).

Doc was a fifth-generation Georgian who spent more than 35 years in civil service and 40 years in Naval Aviation. During those careers, he flew combat missions in World War II and Korea and managed DeKalb-Peachtree Airport while it became the leading general aviation airport in the state. He was a leader in aviation and airport management organizations nationwide and rose to the rank of Captain in the U.S. Navy Reserve.
