"My husband and I have just returned from another fabulous AHI trip - this time to the Italian Alps Aosta Valley with the University of Georgia Alumni Association.
It was truly a wonderful experience beyond all expectations. The accomodations, the tours including meals and the travel guides Enrique and Enzo along with the local guide Deloras were superb.
We truly appreciate all of the hard work that went into such a wonderful experience with so many great travelers. Thanks so very much..."

* UGA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR RETIRES

Dave Muia with Coach Richt and Kit Trench |
David H. Muia '74, who as director of alumni relations led the transformation of the UGA Alumni Society into the self-sustaining,
dues-paying UGA Alumni Association, announced his retirement effective Jan. 31.
"The University of Georgia, including its community of 220,000 alumni, is indebted to Dave Muia for the great energy and enthusiasm he brought to advancing his alma mater over his many years of service," said President Michael F. Adams.
Muia received a bachelor's degree from UGA in 1974 and a master's in education in 1979. He began his UGA career in 1975 in the alumni relations office--and has worked in external affairs ever since.

Dave Muia '74 and son Vince '02 |
"My first job at UGA was a Field Representative for the Alumni Society under Tyus Butler. I was assigned 50 chapters and had the pleasure of driving Dean Tate around to meetings all across Georgia and the southeast. And, what is especially nice is that some of the same wonderful volunteers I met in my early days on the job are still engaged in University matters."
"There have been so many great personal highlights...from the success of the Bicentennial Capital Campaign in 1985, to working on the Olympic games held on our campus, to representing the alumni association at commencement in 2002 when my oldest son graduated." said Muia.
"Dave is a valued colleague on whose judgment I rely, in alumni matters and concerning overall UGA external affairs," said Steve W. Wrigley, senior vice president for external affairs. Under Muia's leadership, the Alumni Association has dramatically expanded its program offerings and reorganized into a worldwide organization with more than 31,000 dues-paying members. The former Alumni Society was succeeded by the Alumni Association in 1996 and opened an Atlanta Alumni Center in 2000. Under Muia's direction, the size of the alumni staff doubled and the operating budget increased from under $100,000 in 1990, much of which was state-funded, to more than $1.5 million today, with no state dollars in the operating budget.
Although retiring from his current position, Muia will be retained to assist with special projects related to the capital campaign and other University initiatives.

Ashley Claire Branan '04

From Left, Susan Cobb Branan, Ashley Claire Branan, Leonard Cobb, Marjorie Cobb |
One University of Georgia senior had decided while still
in high school that she would not attend UGA, but ended up a
third generation alumni legacy.
Ashley Claire Branan of Washington, Georgia felt she
should go away to college. Athens was too near, forty miles,
and her grandparents lived here.
An excellent student -- Salutatorian of her high school
class, she had her choice of colleges, so she began visiting
other campuses. She discovered, however, that "none of them
compared to Georgia."
She then enrolled in UGA's School of Family and Consumer
Sciences, following in the steps of her mother, Susan Cobb
Branan '76, and her grandmother, Marjorie Malcom Cobb '49,
both of whom majored in Home Economics.
Ashley has never regretted her choice. She has
maintained an enviable GPA while becoming involved in student
leadership. She has served as an Ambassador for her school
for two years, served as a legislative aide at the state
capital, and is president of the Student Association of
Consumer and Family Sciences.
In addition, she has been unusually successful in her
part-time job as a salesman for Mary Kay Cosmetics. She is
one of the company's top sales persons and has earned the use
of an automobile. The company has been so pleased that they
have made her a full-time sales director -- a position she
will assume upon graduation this Spring. She is excited
because she shares Mary Kay's philosophy: "We're not just
selling cosmetics, we're changing lives."
Ashley is proud of her legacy -- maintaining the
family's allegiance to UGA. Her mother enjoyed a remarkably
successful career with the UGA Extension Service before
retiring last year. Her grandmother had worked with the
Extension Service in her early years.
Her grandfather, Leonard Cobb '50, is retired from
UGA Food Services where he served as manager for the
McWhorter Hall Cafeteria -- providing meals for Bulldog
athletes.
Ashley also has two aunts, Melanie Cobb Parsons '80,
and Lyn Cobb Ellerbee '83, who are UGA alumnae and who both
married University of Georgia graduates.
The Cobbs count eight UGA alumni in their immediate
family and any time the family gets together, it's a Bulldog
alumni meeting of sorts.
Claude McBride '55, former UGA Alumni Association Tour Director, is a veritable repository of campus lore and is now assisting us in writing legacy stories such as the one above. If you have an interesting legacy story please e-mail Claude at cmcbride@uga.edu.
