UGA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION'S "DESIGNING DREAMS," A CAREER CELEBRATION
OF AWARD WINNING BRIDAL DESIGNER ANNE BARGE '69
WHAT AN EVENT!
The UGA Alumni Association proudly honored graduate and
Alumni Association member Anne Barge Clegg '69 in style! Over
155 alumni enjoyed the magnificent showing of Barge's
2004 bridal gowns as Anne candidly discussed how her
dreams of becoming one of the world's premier bridal
designers came true.

(RIGHT) One of Anne's gorgeous models
Guests arrived at the Four Seasons Hotel in Downtown
Atlanta the evening of January 22 to enjoy delectable
hors d'oeuvres that were passed in the Grand Hallway
by gloved servers. Classical harp selections were
played by Christine Drescher of Atlanta throughout
the evening.
The Grand Ballroom was decorated with beautifully
adorned tables, and each place was set with a goodie
bag courtesy of sponsors SPANX, The Four Seasons
Hotel and Anne Barge. Inside each was a pair of
"Marry Me" SPANX hosiery and a box of Godiva
Chocolates personalized with Anne Barge ribbon.
Guest of honor Anne Barge was introduced by
longtime friend and UGA Alumni Association board member Stella Williams Bailey '69 who
graciously interviewed the designer as she
told the audience all about the lessons she
learned along the way to success. "Where there's
a will, there's a way," Anne answered when asked
what advice she would give to budding entrepreneurs.

Anne told of personal anecdotes that she remembers
of her journey from apprentice to designer. The
audience listened as Anne recalled her first
interview with Priscilla of Priscilla's of Boston
bridal gowns. Many of the Alumni Association's
guests commented on Anne's sense of humor and
how she personalized her stories and engaged
the crowd.
16 of the breathtaking bridal gowns were modeled
at the end of the evening. Alumni were captivated
as each model walked about the ballroom allowing
each guest to see the details up close.
Two very lucky women left the evening with
fabulous prizes! Ginger Davis won a Bed and
Breakfast Weekend at the Four Seasons Hotel.
Everyone is envious of Edan Underwood who won
the $3,500 gift certificate toward her very own
Anne Barge gown. Edan is not yet engaged; however
we did learn that she hopes to be a fashion designer
as well, one day. Good luck Edan, let us know when
you design dreams come true!

When it was time to choose a college, for freshman Elizabeth
Allen Madray '07 of Houston, Texas, it came down to a feeling in
her heart. She was accepted by several prestigious schools, but the
University of Georgia was her final decision. She grew up
in Louisiana and Texas, but had made numerous trips to
Georgia and Athens. Both her parents were UGA graduates, and her two
grandmothers were alumnae. In addition, there were aunts,
an uncle and others in the family who attended UGA.
Her father, Ashley Madray '80 played football for the Bulldogs, and was a student assistant coach
for the 1980 national championship team. He now owns his own business in Houston.
Her mother, Lee Sewell Madray '80 is a pre-school teacher. Her parents were high school sweethearts
at Wayne County High School in Jesup, GA.

Her maternal grandmother, Madge Sewell Bellinger '39 was
a newspaper journalist and her paternal grandmother, Anita
Madray Yow '73, a teacher. Both grandmothers now live
in St. Simons Island, GA.
A petite brunette, Elizabeth lives in Brumby Hall and is a
member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She says she made the
right decision when she chose UGA. "I'm very happy. I love
it here," she says.
Needless to say, her family is proud of their third
generation Bulldog.

*FOUNDERS' DAY LECTURE MARKED UGA'S 219TH BIRTHDAY
The University of Georgia Alumni Association
celebrated UGA's 219th birthday Jan. 27 by
presenting the annual Founders' Day Lecture at
3 p.m. in the University Chapel.
 |

Genelle G. Morain, emeritus professor
|
Genelle G. Morain,
emeritus professor in the College of Education,
delivered the lecture, which is sponsored by the
Alumni Association and the Emeriti Scholars, a
group of retired faculty members who continue
to be involved in the university's academic life.
The January 27th lecture commemorates the date
that UGA was established in 1785 when the Georgia
General Assembly adopted a charter creating the
university as America's first state chartered
university.
Morain, who was Aderhold Distinguished
professor of language education, is a
member of the Emeriti Scholars, a group organized in 2002. Group members,
who are especially known for their
teaching abilities, carry out part-time
teaching, research and service assignments
for the university.

Robert Pratt, Professor of History
|
 |
A pioneer in the academic field of
cross-cultural understanding, Morain
spoke on the topic Dissecting Diversity:
Human Commonalities and Cultural Differences. Her talk was followed
by brief commentaries from Robert
Pratt, professor
of history and author of a book on the
desegregation of UGA, and UGA student
Daniel Del Portal.
A reception immediately followed
afterward in Moore College.

Daniel Del Portal, UGA Student
|
The Alumni Association and the Emeriti
Scholars also continued a practice
started last year of commemorating
Founders' Day by contributing a book
to the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript
Library in the UGA main library. The
book donated this year is "Education
and the Creative Potential," by E. Paul
Torrance, an international leader in
creativity research who was on the
College of Education faculty for more
than 30 years prior to his death in 2003.
The Founder's Day Lecture will air on University CH 15 on the following dates:
