Alumni Author Spotlight
Patrick Pittard ’67, retired CEO and Distinguished Executive in Residence for the Terry School of Business, is being marketed by nine undergraduate Leonard Leadership Scholars, MBAs, and University of Georgia Law students in his Institute for Leadership Advancement Lessons In Leadership class. Pittard challenged them to sell 1,000 copies of his newly released book, "Bearfoot: A Northbounder E-mails from the Appalachian Trail."
Pittard’s book is an account of the 56-year-old’s thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail (AT) in 2002. The 2,168 mile trek, which was his first hike, lead him through 14 states from Georgia to Maine with altitudes ranging from sea level to almost 7,000 feet and lasted from February to August.
Alum Gives Back to his Alma Mater
Roswell, Ga. native, Jeremy Minnick '02, and friend Jason Long started J House Media, a full service website design and development company. Having had a computer since the age of three this field is a perfect fit for Jeremy. With the added help of Client and Project Manager Lee Ann Phillips, J House Media is a glowing success with an impressive roster of clients including the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce, the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, Chateau Elan, Hilton Head Land Corporation and, of particular enjoyment, the UGA Athletic Department. Jeremy can be found in the Sanford Stadium press box each home game updating the Bulldog website, which Jeremy laughs about and repeats the old cliché, "It's tough work, but someone has to do it." (Pictured L-R: Long, Phillips and Minnick)
*Bulldog Sweethearts
Back by popular demand, the UGA Alumni Association is seeking alumni love stories. If you and your spouse are UGA alumni, we want to post your story on our Bulldog Sweethearts page in honor of Valentine’s Day. Please email your information to Tami Gardner or mail it to UGA Alumni Association, Wray-Nicholson House, 298 S. Hull Street, Athens, GA 30602.
Class Ring Found
Jonathan Ross '99 of Buford, Georgia received his second UGA class ring on September 26, 2005 after Balfour gladly replaced his original which was cast improperly. The following month while tailgating at the homecoming football game, Jonathan forgot his ring on the sink after washing his hands in the men’s restroom at the Science Library. When he returned for it, the ring was gone.
The following Monday, Carla Dunn ’95 emailed the Alumni Association requesting help locating the owner of a ring her father found. The Alumni Association, with the help of Balfour, located the owner by the serial numbers inside the ring, which was Jonathan’s. The first thing he said when the Alumni Association phoned was, "You aren't by chance calling me about my class ring, are you?" He was ecstatic to get his ring back…again.
If you find a UGA class ring and would like to locate its rightful owner, please contact the UGA Alumni Association at 1-800-606-8786.
Uga Stands Guard
As Hurricane Katrina made its way through the Gulf Coast region in August, UGA Alumni Association member David Clifford ’61 of Natchez, MS left a statue of Uga to stand guard during the storm. Clifford returned to his property, all that was left was a slab that was his house, the statue of Uga which was still in decent shape, and a Georgia Bulldog flag attached to a destroyed golf cart. Clifford was proud of his Bulldog for surviving the storm.
Eatin' Q, Swattin' Bugs, all in the Name of UGA!
UGA Alumni Association Board Member Jeff Finger '91, in his continuing efforts to promote the University, presented Jim Graddy and Bill Marrick of Pig-n-Chik BBQ with a Georgia "G" Flag.
Finger, a Memphis Barbeque Association and Kansas City Barbeque Society Certified BBQ Judge, said, "Good BBQ deserves Good atmosphere, the key letter being 'G' of course."
Graddy, a Tech fan, agreed, in bipartisan fashion, to display the "G" flag along side his Tech flag at the restaurant's location on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Atlanta. Pig-n-Chik BBQ was recently featured on the Public Broadcast special: "Atlanta's Best Barbeque." Finger indicated, however, that no matter how good the BBQ was, he couldn't eat there if only a Tech flag was displayed.

Pound Family
If you could measure an alumni legacy's importance to UGA by its weight, one of the most significant might surprise you. It is only four Pounds, but they represent four generations that have rendered many years of loyal service to their Alma Mater.
1884 graduate, Dr. Jere M. Pound was the president of the State Normal School which later became Georgia Teachers College (GTC), a post he held until GTC merged with the University of Georgia in 1933. He then served as president of Georgia State Women's College in Valdosta, known today as Valdosta State University. Pound was also president of East Florida Seminary, which became the University of Florida.
His son, Merritt B. Pound ’18, ’24 returned to Athens and joined the UGA faculty where he taught History after he earned his Ph.D in History at the University of North Carolina. In 1939, he became the first head of the Political Science department, a position he held for 25 years.
Colonel (Ret.) Merritt B. Pound, Jr., '55 represents the third generation. He spent his career in the U.S. Air Force and continued his education at Kent State University and holds Masters degrees from Webster and Auburn Universities. He returned, in the family tradition, and served on the UGA faculty as Professor and Head of the Air Force ROTC. He and his wife presently operate a full-working farm near Athens, and are both active in community and campus affairs, especially UGA alumni activities.
The fourth Pound, Merritt B, Pound III, '80, is a Sergeant Major Commander in the U.S. Army, stationed in Orlando, Florida.
In addition to being excellent students, at least two Pounds "weighed in" in athletics also. Merritt Sr. was a basketball star at UGA and Merritt, Jr. played Number One singles and doubles for the Bulldog tennis team for four years.
