| | Maxine Burton City: Athens, GA Email: burton@flowersincballoons.com Graduation Year/Degree: BSED 1972, MED 1978 Career: President, Burton + Burton Favorite UGA memory: When I graduated from Forsyth County High School in 1969, I entered Gainesville College as a freshman and was delighted with the small campus that was so close to home. After settling into college life, I began to visit friends at other college campuses but remained very happy where I was with no plans to change. One weekend, however, my best friend and I visited the University of Georgia campus and it was so beautiful that it took my breathe away. I immediately fell in love -- with the beautiful setting, the wonderful people, the busier pace and even the City of Athens itself -- and knew immediately that this was where I wanted to be. I went home that day and told my parents that I wanted to transfer to UGA as quickly as possible. My friend did the same and the next thing we knew, we were roommates at Georgia! I have many fond memories of Gainesville College and I am grateful that I was able to be a part of that wonderful campus, but on that fateful day, the University of Georgia truly stole my heart away and I've been here in Athens ever since. In 1972, Athens suffered one of the worst hail storms in its history and the memory of that storm is indelibly etched in my mind. I was a senior at UGA, living in the Alpha Xi Delta sorority house on campus. The storm hit very quickly that day and I remember so clearly all of us standing at the window watching in awe as the hailstones stormed down around us. I remember the smell of the rain, the sound of the storm pounding on the roof and the amazing sight of those incredible hailstones bouncing off of everything they touched. What I remember most, however, was the closeness we all felt standing at that window together, watching our beloved campus take such a terrible beating. It was one of those bittersweet moments that we all experience in life - very scary at the time but so very sweet in retrospect.

Some of my best friendships were established there, and even though we are all much older now, we still like to get together every year for a Dawgs game.

| | Walt Green City: Wilmette, IL Email: wwgreen3@msn.com Graduation Year/Degree: BBA 1971, MBA 1972 Career: Private Banker, JP Morgan Bank Favorite UGA memory: Trips to Poss’s on Sunday nights to eat BBQ...the Tennessee game when it poured rain and we ditched coats and ties for blue jeans and tennis shoes...Finance courses with Dr. Harvey, when I finally started to “get it”...paying $70 to rent a hand held calculator for 2 days to use for my MBA Accounting final and making a 99 on the exam (Dr. Tummins said it was the first time anyone had requested to use a calculator in a final)...after the game jam sessions at the ATO house on River Road (RIP). |
| | Gary Hill City: Atlanta, GA Email: caghill@bellsouth.net Graduation Year/Degree: AB 1966 Career: President, First Investments Consulting Corporation Favorite UGA memory: Fall of 1965 the start of my senior year when Georgia beat defending National Champions Alabama. Then later that same season after an out of state win, fans, students and the Athens community welcomed the football team home at the airport and the whole town of Athens was partying hard and celebrating. Coach Dooley really turned things around that season, even Dean Tate was right in the middle of the celebration and didn't throw a wet blanket on any of it.

| | Sam Hodge City: Birmingham, GA Email: sgraveshodge@yahoo.com Graduation Year/Degree: BSA 1999 Career: Favorite UGA memory: Approaching the end of my Junior year at UGA, it seemed I could do no wrong: Dean's list, leadership accolades, campus recognition, beautiful girlfriend, and a coveted student job at a popular local outdoor retailer. On the outside, things were as ideal as they could get. Internally, however, I was suffering. My parents had decided to divorce after 26 years of marriage. And the farm on which I was raised was being sold. My sister and I dealt with the realities as best we could. In spite of the fact my parents didn't speak anymore, they put aside their differences for one day: My graduation from UGA. It was the last time my Dad, Mama, Sister and I were together as a family. No classroom grade, no plaque or award, and no amount of campus recognition could ever compare to having us all together on that day.

The night of the graduation I spent time on campus just visiting familiar sites - the Chapel, the Arch, the Journalism Building, and the Coliseum. Just trying to make sure I did not forget any of the great times I had at UGA. I also vividly remember walking in Sanford Stadium that morning of my graduation. That was a rush.

| | Chris Moder City: Norcross, GA Email: moder@uga.edu Graduation Year/Degree: BLA 1978 Career: Favorite UGA memory: Among my favorite UGA memories is relaxing in the Founders Memorial Garden on warm spring and cool crisp fall days, after working long hours on landscape architecture studio projects in Denmark Hall. However, there were also a few bad memories associated with this too, when I’d fall asleep and wake up to realize I was late for my next class. |
| | Jim Moore City: Gainesville, GA Email: jmoore@sidneyosmithinc.com Graduation Year/Degree: BBA 1969 Career: President, Sidney O. Smith, Inc. Favorite UGA memory: Some of my best memories had nothing to do with the University but my time in Athens. Now that I am older, not sure I would want to see them in print. What does come to mind, I had several management courses under Col. Curran. He was retired air force. He always managed to relate the topic back to his career in the air force. The great thing about Col. Curran, the class got to vote if we should have a final exam.

| | Brian Weaver City: Tyrone, GA Email: blweaver@charter.net Graduation Year/Degree: BBA 1994 Career: Dewitt Weaver Golf Solutions Favorite UGA memory: My favorite UGA memory was my first trip to the UGA campus to visit my sister in her Freshman year. I wasn’t even in high school yet, but it was then and there that I decided that the University of Georgia was where I wanted to attend college.

| | Marilyn White City: Atlanta, GA Email: mj@mcrovvlaw.com Graduation Year/Degree: ABJ 1973 Career: Paralegal - McLarty, Robinson, & VanVoorhies, LLP Favorite UGA memory: It's hard to pick just one memory, since there were 4 years of great ones (sorority friends and activities, football games, singing in the UGA Chorus with Robert Shaw) but probably near the top would be my Study-Abroad quarter in Dijon, France, in the summer of 1971. It was a very educating and maturing experience to blend into another culture, living like they live, speaking (and thinking) in their language. It has enabled me to always look at political situations from another perspective, not only the American view. I've traveled to Europe several times since then, but always fondly remember the wonderful summer I spent studying in France, thanks to UGA.

Sadly, the KA house will soon be torn down.
